Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

If you have to ask I'd get someone to change it. This information is in the owners manual.

All the info you need is here - Fluids and Oils | my-gti.com

(that is after you look up the type required - I would upgrade to a 504.00/507.00 as this replaces the standard used on your car at time of manufacture)

      Thanks for the info

Probably not a necessary comment regarding getting someone else to change it, perhaps you've owned Vw's your whole life but having a background and working on everything from Australian, to Japanese and now to german cars all previous cars i have worked on haven't specified the exact specific brand and type of oil which the car takes.... fair enough most specify the viscosity but after reading various posts on here about how VW uses a certain type of oil to extend service intervals i thought i would at least ask.

If i asked how to remove a sump plug or something i would understand, i would just like to put the right oil into the car and stick with what the manufacture recommends.

Fair enough but there is no need to specify a brand, any 502.00 or 504.00/507.00 will do. Castrol powerflow ll3 whatever 504.00/507.00 seems to be becoming the most common (it's listed on the link given) but is only available in bulk.

Don't forget to pick up a new sump plug, too. The washer is captive, therefore, comes with the plug.

Or cut it off and fit a new copper washer

Seriously, for the $4 a new plug is worth, why bother?
