I'd take carservices.com with a grain of salt then. I live in the real world and mine are real costs. My service costs are what Subaru have usually quoted and all their services are set down as taking a set time. I assume VW will be the same. I have found their parts prices across Aust are consistent but different dealers use slightly different labour rates. I have no reason to complain to them about my service costs that's for sure. I will complain it my Golf costs $1000+ though for its 60,000km services. Another surprise is that my Forester has reached 196,000km without the need for a brake pad change. We are keeping it as our second car now and will be used for longer trips towing our camper trailer.

Ordinary services cost just over $200 while every 50,000 they were arond $550 with gearbox/diff oil, brake fluid etc. It has cost me a total of $4307 for all servicing up to 196,000km and has not had one warranty claim. It doesn't use any oil. I hope our 90TSI we are about to get can match that.
Sounds like they weren't servicing as per the book, my Subaru cost me around $200 a service for the minor services but the additional servicing as the distance/time increased really adds up.

These two services alone are more than the major on the Golf.

      125,000Km/5yr Serv 4 h 688.00 - 857.00*

      That's $1286 to $1606 for 1 years servicing.

The carservices website is useful for comparison, it takes the hours shown in the servicing schedule along with parts required and gives a price that isn't skewed by people having their car incorrectly serviced.

I will complain it my Golf costs $1000+ though for its 60,000km services.
It costs what it costs, you can work out what your 60,000km service will be by checking what needs to to be done, taking into account time and distance based items that may be required on that date and anything else that may need to be done like brake pads.

Given his area (WA) and if it's not thrashed and does long trips that's quite believable. My old MX83 Cressida had no trouble achieving 100,000Km from its first set of pads with most of its running in suburban Melbourne — although it did go round Australia a couple of times. I traded it at 160,000 and the second set still had easily another 40,000 in them.

It's all in how you drive — I mostly roll up to lights and use brakes only to wipe off the last few K's (comes from learning to drive on cars with 2-wheel brakes and trucks that almost had to be notified by mail when you wanted to stop, I suppose.)

If you learn to do that it's surprising how often you don't have to stop at all. Gets you good fuel figures, too.

My Dad babied a 1996 Toyota Vienta Touring 3.0L v6 manual and got 330,000k from the pads. Front and rear! He traded in in and got $1,000 for it on a 2007 Corolla. The way he drives it will mean no pads by the time he's too old to drive!

I think my Dad learnt the same way as yourself!

I looked on another forum and this is what a person from melbourne was quoted.

                    Hi All,
Thought I'd update anyone, with a R32 that lives in Melbourne. I'm up for the 60,000kms service and did some ringing around today and got the following quotes:

                    1. Essenden VW Dealership $1233
                    2. Volkspower (Burwood) $1300+
                    3. Richmond Motors (Services alot of European cars) $995
                    4. Balcatta VW Specialist (Richmond) $1100

                    Search Results
Holy crap I thought Volkspower was the preference for non dealer servicing for many on this forum. I assumed that was because they were cheaper for log book servicing

Sorry, been away a couple of days.

re. the Forester's servicing. I'm OCD about my cars and their servicing and they always get done to the book. They have been done by 4 different Subaru dealers and I have had no complaints. In fact the dealer I purchased it at (Wippells in Toowoomba) also service VW's in the same workshop and is where I'll be purchasing the Golf. Sure, the Forester has had more services done than the Golf will - 11 to the 125,000km mark instead of 8 to 120.000km - but the big service doesn't get done till 125,000km and then it only cost $756. From what I can work out here (and this is what I need to find out) the Golf will need 2 major services to get to 120,000km and it appears that they will cost between $1000 - $2000 each. I will reach that in 3 years. I have read BeigeJet's post about his $2388 105,000km service and that worries me. In fact that's more than anything scares me with this purchase.I've been used to paying $200 every 12,500km to with every 50,000km that service extending to $450 - $550 with the gearbox/diff oil, coolant, brake fluid, air filter change, spark plugs. The cycle started all over again at 125,000km with the next big service at 250,000km.

re. the brakes - yeah, I guess I must be easy on them- that's what they remark on at the services - but I do lots of distance driving which doesn't require much use of the brakes. The '98 CamryV6 I owned before the Forester had its first pad change at 210,000km.

re. towing - we have done about 40,000km with the camper trailer, twice across the Nullarbor and once to Broome through the NT and Kimberleys. You don't need to use the brakes much on those trips, believe me.

What I'm really wanting to know is - time isn't a factor with the Golf's servicing for me but distance is. What is the experience here for the costs of the 15,000km, 30,000km & 45,000km services? Can I only expect to get 60,000km or less out of a set of brake pads (and rotars)? Am I going to have to check engine oil every few 1000km and top up between services? The last 2 cars I've had haven't needed warranty - what are VW like to deal with if I need it with this Golf?

We have decided on a white 90TSI with no extras and are paying well less than $30,000. We are so looking forward to enjoying the classy design, build quality and driving exprience but also the economy. It's a bit ironic that the last white car we owned was our '77 Golf LS 5door. We had it for 5 years then and did 165,000km. It used to need new pads every 30,000km but we lived in a different place then. The experiences I've had indicate that components last so much longer in cars now there is no comparison.

Buddy, first realise that you're posting in the MK5 section. The car being serviced was an R32. What are you purchasing? Surely it's not a brand new R32

Carservice.com.au gives you a good indication as it lists the manufacturers service for each km/time point, what is done, and how much they're charging (in a range from low to high). Look at that and then do a few calls to your dealer and local service agents and find out.
