  • Suspension in the MkV

    Hi Guys,

    An very odd question but...

The mechanic was saying that my golf suspension is bad in my mkV GTi 2008 and needs replacement (my sis reversed my car into a pole) now some1 has offered to sell me the back half of their Golf (an 2008 TDI) for $1200. Now if I buy that back half I will be able to use the lights, the tailgate and the suspension? on my damaged GTi but... I know the suspension in the TDi is different to the GTi Golf as its more lowered in GTi but does any1 know if the TDI has actual/same suspension in the components compared to the Gti.

    Thanks

    Not quite on topic but:

Don't want to scare you with this.
Know someone who had similar issue. They had a MkV Golf that was rear ended while sitting at the lights. Panel beater replaced the rear bumper as nothing else was damaged. Not so. The impact had buckled the boot floor slightly and knocked the suspension out of alignment. In the end had to have the whole boot floor replaced along with other stuff. (Panel beater said something about MkV Golfs don't do well in rear enders becuase everything is so tightly packed in.)

An indicator is the rear suspension makes a faint creeking sound when you push down on the rear of the car.

The actual suspension componets might be fine just the alignment is knackered.

BTW, how hard did she hit the pole?

      Thanks Mate

I would not be surprised if the suspension is out of whack...

Hey basically what I am asking is, has the GTi got the same suspension system as an normal golf mk V such as a golf mkv TDI... Apart from the springs which cause the 15 mm lowering....????

        See Suspension - Mkvgtiwiki

If not what is the actual difference... Cheers

The panel beater was an idiot who was too lazy to check before he did his half arsed repair.

We're already ascertained that the panel beater was an idiot but this confirms it. If his definition of a car doing well in an accident is that it stays intact he should consider doing everyone a favor and retire. Modern cars have crumple zones around a high strength area that surrounds the occupants to protect them, the crumple zones protects them further. The Golf like all VW/Audi/Skoda etc cars uses four different strengths of steel, stronger for critical parts of the car and weaker in areas like crumple zones. The hatch area is a crumple zone.

This is an indicator that the hand brake is on!

No matter what your excess it's going to be cheaper to leave this for the insurance company to pay for. Find a reputable repairer and let them do the repair properly.

                Thank you captain obvious!

Except the car was in neutral with the handbrake off.

Only differences as far as I know are shocks, springs, and possibly the swaybar.

Personally, I'd get it properly assessed before going out and buying a donor car that you may or may not need.

<fact>The rear makes a creaking noise in many mk v's when the handbrake is on and the rear is pushed down on</fact>

Your claim that a creak when you push down on the rear of the car is an indication that the rear suspension is out of alignment is not a fact and based on experience with one dodgy incompetent smash repairer.

The creak was noticed by the owner before the boot floor was replaced.

I am not claiming that a creak is the only indicator or fact just a possibility.

Anyway we are well and truly:
