It wont take hours to find the reverse light, if u can change ur tailight bulbs u can find the harnesses that feed the tailights. As for power drop, itd be minimal but yes a relay would make sense.

Lucky for me i have the tow bar fitted and have a reverse wire next to the spot where the plugs come through the grommet.
Thanks

Many people run the rear camera off the reversing circuit

Good voltmeters have a very high input impedance in excess of 10megohms
This is so they don't place a load on the circuit being tested which results in incorrect readings2012.1 Skoda Octavia VRS DSG Wagon - Carbonio cold air intake and pipe - HPA Motorsports BBK 355mm rotors 6 pot calipers

I have a Pioneer AVIC head unit which the previous owner had installed in our 2nd hand 2009 GTI Pirelli edition Golf. The wife has nagged me into fitting a reversing camera as she has gotten used to having one after I fitted a AVC9000 into the Jetta (poor car got written off a while ago when I got t-boned)..
Anyway, I picked up a camera off of Ebay and spent a couple of hours running cables yesterday. I have wired it up to the reverseing globe wiring in the hatch, bitch of a job to get all the bits of trim off but anyway it is all done now.
Mistake I made way just having the ignition turned on when finalizing the install to confirm that all worked and sure enough got a nice pic when I selected reverse. So fitted all the interior trim and put all the tools away, even brought SWMBO out to the garage to show her the handywork, happy wife happy life and all that.. Anyway fast forward to today and off to the shops she goes this morning only to come back and say the camera doesnt work.. Huh, bring her out to the car, turn on the ignition and select reverse, low and behold a nice picture on the screen. However, I decided to start the car and sure enough no pic.. WTF!!
So with the keys in and the ignition on but motor off the camera works fine, soon as you start the motor the pic drops. Can anyone shed any light on this?
Thanks
Tim

I have a Jetta and running the aftermarket reverse camera, I have the same problem when I just wired straight onto the the reverse light circuit. After that took it to my friend to check it out and we decided to put a relay on the circuit withe the reverse camera an since then the camera working perfectly. We also did my polo with the same trick and it had been working since for the last 3 years.

All sorted,
as previously mentioned I just installed a relay this morning and it's all working fine
To maybe save others having to go through the same drama I connected the relay up thus:
Pole 30 - 12Volt positive from the rear power plug in boot
Pole 87 - to the camera 12 Volt positive
Pole 85 - Camera negative and to ground (earth)
Pole 86 - I ran a wire the 12 volt positive wire in the hatch for the reversing light. NOTE: this wire could be the one located in the front C connector under the dash but buggered if I could get it to work so I just connected as above and all works fine
If I could work it out then there is hope for everyone lol

I have had exactly the same problem with an Eonon D5153 HU and a reversing camera. Ignition on and in reversing camera works well. Select reverse with the engine running: black screen with camera icon in the top left corner.
I understand the relay:
Pole 30 big fat 12V from the power plug in the boot.
Pole 87 to the camera 12V + (this is a very light wire on my camera).
Pole 85 negative and to ground. ( ditto)
Pole 86 This is the part I am not sure of. Is this the actuating wire for the relay? Do I take a wire from this and splice it into the reversing light wire, because it is already being fed by the existing harness?
My reversing camera came without a red trigger wire. It only has a yellow RCA plug that connects to the “Back sight Video Input” green socket. I don’t know if this makes any difference.
Sorry to be pedantic. I hope you can clarify it for me.Last edited by colinoz; 17-07-2014, 10:10 PM.

My camera did NOT come with a trigger wire on the video lead either so I actually ran the video RCA cable and an extra wire from behind the dash to the rear of the car.
The pioneer unit has both the video RCA input for the reversing camera AS WELL AS a 'trigger' wire thats also needs to be connected to 12v when reverse is selected so the unit knows when reverse is selected that it needs to switch to that input.
Excuse the long winded (probably poorly worded reply) but I have just got home from work after leaving here at 05:30 this morning and it's now 23:10 here
