couple of newbie GTI questions..

just got my 2008 GTI DSG yesterday!

Couple of questions which I hope you guys can help (been right through the manuals to no avail)

1. is the windscreen 'thermally insulated' with a metal coating?

2. the rear drink holders (ones that are under the AC vents) - when you fold them down are they meant to spring open into shape, or does the user have to force them apart to squeeze a bottle in?

3. in D mode, is it normal to have a noticeable 'lag' when you accelerate?

4. any idea if the bottle opener is a very expensive part? Mine didn't come with it?

1. Not sure.
2. Like most VW drink holders, they're full of springs, gears, and levers, and more than likely, broken. I'm pretty certain the the arms are sprung-loaded, meaning you stretch them out to hold the bottle.
3. Yes, but in saying that, you shouldn't get a shove in the back as you're about to come to a stop. If you do, it's an issue with the Mechatronics in the DSG.
4. No, but have a look in the folder that holds the operators' manuals. It's often stashed in there.

You can buy the bottle openers from the dealer or places like Dubadiction (34.95 to 49.95 for plastic or stainless steel).

3. The DSG system will learn your driving style. If a granny was driving it then it would learn that style... Once a more lively person jumps in it takes a little time to learn your driving habit.

1. No.
2. They spring apart manually and hold the drink under pressure (in the manual)
3. Yes and No, the manual will describe how the DSG operates and you can take off faster by using the handbrake and/or left foot braking and slowly back off the brake until the clutches start to engage.
4. $10-$50 from ebay or the dealer.
