  • Warranty on Mag wheel

Vw Australia have agreed to replace one of my Mags on the Gt as the clear coat and paint is peeling off, They use Bob jane to do their tyre work so i thought it was just a simply job of me taking the new Wheel there change the tyre over and return the damaged one,
Wrong ,i have to leave the car there they will take me home about 10k's and send the pickup vehicle back to pick me up after the wheel is changed ,all up it might take all day just for a 30 minute job .

I'd consider myself lucky to be getting it repaired free of charge.

It's just one of those things that needs to be done by the book.

Russ the whole mag wheel was peeling the clear cote and the under had come off in several places and was patchy, of cause it was a defective paint job and VOW head office acknowledged the wheel was faulty nothing to do with luck .

          Ian,

I'm not doubting that the wheel had a fault with the paint work, I'm just meaning that with it being a fairly minor issue it surprises me that VW would warrant it. It might cause you a little inconvenience but at least they are repairing it for you.

EDIT - Sorry my mistake, replacing it for you.

No their giving me a complete new wheel, as they have to send the wheel back to VW head office as this is a rare occurrence they said ?

              Ian that's strange, really.
My research on refinishing Classix showed that BBS don't use a clear coat at all.
The can of (BBS proprietary) touch up paint available through VW spares says that NO CLEAR COAT TO BE APPLIED OVER THE PAINT.
Are you sure the rims hadn't been 'touched up' before you took delivery?

There is reason to suggest that the paint has come off, revealing the bare cast alloy below.

Regardless, they're giving you a new rim, and chauffering you to and from the dealership. However, you still seem a bit upset over it.

Seems that Volkswagen dealers can't do anything right, too many customers have their heads buried somewhere and expect the world to revolve around them and their requirements (not directed at the OP in particular either - just check out all the complaints about dealers because they missed a spot when washing the car or some other minor event not worth mentioning).

Here's a picture of the wheel you can see the discolouration where the paint is missing

You're lucky they're replacing the wheel given the car has nearly 40,000kms on it, is 2 years old and you're the second owner. Using acidic wheel cleaners and leaving them on for too long can cause this so it's surprising they're doing something about it.

I'd be more concerned about the Continentals VW put on them, that split at the sidewalls.

Well apparently they tell me the preparation of the wheel before it was painted was the problem, If was as Maverick suggested why is there only one wheel affected, I'm sure VW wouldn't be giving me a new wheel if they thought it was caused by using a mag wheel cleaner?

I would've approached Continental, seeking blood. It's a known fault on the tyres fitted to most GTs.
