Because it has such good low down torque the R32 can feel a tad understeery in stock form if you throttle on too hard in the wrong part of a corner. But the gen 2 haldex set to race and some good coilovers certainly eliminated that. But if you only drove one in stock I suppose you would never know that. At least there is a scope for improvement to the awd. Unfortunately for the gti it will awlays be a fwd.
True, and generally speaking AWD's are more apparent terminal understeerers than FWD's, but I aint here to start a turd fight. Obviously some of us enjoy very different aspects of motoring. The R has had some very reputable motoring journalists speaking in a high regard of the outcome VW have obtained so I cant wait to have a sample, "plastic" or not, seems as though the R will be a sales success.
I might add, if I owned an R32 I would be saving my ass off to fit a turbo kit! Then it is game over!!
That's exactly why I briefly looked at the spec of the EVO and STI, but walked away after a drive - very cheap and nasty interiors, also the reason why FPV F6 came off my shopping list, couldn't bring myself to outlaying that much on a fast taxi!
I played with the idea of an R32 for a long time, but in the end overall package of the R snared me (head vs heart kinda thinking), just got to wait till Nov now!!!

reputable motoring journalists like wheels mag 2 isues back who said they couldnt get a decent 0-100 run out of the R36 and that the gt liberty was much faster. Then to be told by a reader the following issue that it does in fact have launch control which they didnt even know existed! Not sure I trust anyone to "test drive" on my behalf.
wow, man.... i think the .:R32 is an awesome car, and i like the look of it A LOT better than the R, but im curious..... in your opinion, is the R better than the R32 in ANY way whatsoever?
or would you head off "the R is faster. full stop" with "but the R32 has more usable torque and thus SHOULD faster in reality'', ''the R is very easily and relatively cheaply moddable" with "but the mods will really compromise the reliability of the car [lol]" and "the interior of the mk6 is, by EVERYONE'S account, much more refined than the mk5" with "well, that must be your opinion, because apparently im the only one who thinks that the mk5 is superior in every way to its newer sibling"?
not having a dig, but you dont seem willing to concede that a car that's 3 years newer/ better than its predecessor, might just be, in fact, better.

Maybe have a read of the last few pages then drive both if you can..
Interesting review Valver. How long did you own an R32 for? The power gets pretty dull when it tapers off after ~4k rpm. Either way the R32 was too heavy/slow for the pricetag (when new).
They are all good in different ways, not hard to do a few cosmetic mods and you should be considering the R after it's retuned as we do get the detuned version here and i think it may leave you with different thoughts (not that i've driven one but would be a lot more potent). EVO's and WRX's are fine for all out speed, but lack refinement.
I've had my R32 for about 18 months, though it's now for sale
I see your point about retuning the R to reach its full potential, but I could also tune my R32 - the old skool way - (or tune an EVO etc), so we need to compare standard cars here, otherwise it becomes a pretty subjective debate!
I want to also point out that some of the Japanese vehicles everyone is very quick to slag off are most certainly not lacking in refinement... I'm not talking about build quality, NVH, resale, or anything like that, refinement goes well beyond how it is screwed together, and the R (and the R32) could learn a lot about chassis refinement, steering feel and responsiveness from some of these cars. No, I don't like them as an overall package either, but I have actually driven them (a point that is perhaps important here...!) and they do make you rethink VW's pitch at the four-pot turbo 4WD market.
If the Scirocco R were on sale, I'd have one straight away, as it at least offers a point of difference being more like a performance coupe. When I buy a Euro car, I want it stand out from the pack for reasons beyond its build quality, as there's so much more to a car than this. It seems a lot of people stand by the old, "Yeah, but it's so refined" excuse, when this shouldn't be the primary reason you buy a car - it needs to have the whole package.
It makes me laugh when the "Mk5 recruits" (the many new VW buyers who wouldn't have looked twice at the brand until the Mk5 GTI came along!) jump in to defend the brand when they have little idea of the legacy underpinning it, and how each new model loses more and more of the soul of a Mk1 GTI, or a Mk2 Golf Rallye.

People mention tunig due to the fact that we are enthusiasts and the majority of us tune our cars. Yes you can tune an R32 but you have no way near the bang for buck compared to the 4 cylinder turbo, that is why it has been raised.
You cant speak of a modern car losing its soul as this is just the nature of the industry due to the changes on all cars with the added requirements for safety etc. Many cars have lost their original sould, nature of the industry, cars get fatter each year.
was loged off champ, still typing. You get my point? Its hard to keep the sould of a car when the industry has forced change.... has happened to many models not just the GTI. I beleive they, VW, have done a great job with the comprimise for the modern day take of their models... my opinion.

Understood. But it's not the soul oif the GTI that has been ripped out. It's the soul of the Golf member of the .:R lineage. The .:R32.
And your point about industry forcing the change....not entirely correct. It's our climate and shift in environmental responsibilities that have caused this....a point I made in an earlier post. Champ.

...and improving the breed which has caused the change in producing the R32. It is sad as charachter has been lost for the sake of a lighter donk which spews out more torque.
