  • Platinum Gray Jetta - Best Tint Darkness

    Hi,

I am due to pick up my 2010 Jetta 77 tdi. My budget could not strecth to a 103 or anything higher, but i am really happy with what I am getting. My first VW so I am pumped!

The paint colour is platinum grey.

I have it booked in to have the windows tinted. The tinting guy reccommeneded I use the darkest legal tint.

What tint darkness do people recoommend for a platinum gray Jetta?

Would the darkest tint look best?

    Your thoughts are apppreciated.

    Thanks
    Pete

20 is quite dark, in low light you may need to wind the windows down.
When there is light around it's okay to see through.

35 would be legal and good, but may not seem too dark.
Best bet is to go and see if they have any on display.

Grey and black go well together, so go darkest legal I say!

Yeah, the darkest legal tint would look nice with silver or platinum grey cars.
I would recommend Midnight Express or Octane (if you are getting the tint done through Tint-a-Car) or similar types.
If I am not wrong Octane looks darker than Midnight Express - although, they are both 35% - that's what I was told when I contacted 3 different Tint A Car.

Mine's done through a reputable local window tinting shop (Tint by TKO) and they use Solar Gard (it offers limited lifetime warranty) and it's 22%.
I find 22% is till ok at night - though, wouldn't go lower than that.

          Cheers,
          J

            Thanks for your help!

I have the car booked in at Premier Tint Melbourne; they have a few different tints available; Premier Tint Melbourne Brisbane Car Home & Office Window Tinting, Alarms & More.

Looks like they have 20% .... which I assume is legal!

I can not wait to get this car!

You assumed wrong, 35% is legal, anything below this is illegal and unsafe. If you get pulled over you'll be forced to pull it off the front windows at least and will cop a canary, if you have an accident and the insurance company and/or the police determine the tint to be in any way at fault you'll be in the crap big time.

Even 35% is pushing it safety wise at night (I posted a heap of info on this a while ago - do a search).

If it's any help, here are before and after photos of my Bora with 35% tint:

I don't find any problem at night but then I am used to it as my previous car had this level of tint too. In NSW I don't think companies can even legally tint a car to less than 35%, the guy that did mine said they could put 20% on but would then not be able to give me any paperwork showing it had been done. It is available as certain vehicles (i.e. bus class) can have any tint on rear windows, cars it is min 35 all round to stay legal.

Jetta is due early next week. It isn't replacing any car, my wife and i were sharing one car for a couple years, good way to save some cash. Main competitors were the Accord and Liberty. My wife wanted to look at civics but we did not bother. In the end the boot was too large to pass by; we have a kid on the way so it seemed like a no brainer. I hope I do not get any of the DSg problems i have read in other posts.

We wanted a balck Jetta but that was a four month wait so we ended with a Platinum Grey with MDI. Getting it through South Yarra VW.

Anthony how long have you had yours I'd love to know your thoughts and ideas.

My Jetta was written off by hail last month, but I had it for over 3 years, and did 56000 kilometers in it.
3 weeks ago I replaced it with a Honda Accord Euro,MY11,and have only done 1600 kilometers in it,but am loving it just as much as the Jetta.

Funnily enough this was my 4th VW,I have also had a Ford and Holden,

I also bought from South Yarra,Michael Cerdwell.
They were okay...landed up servicing at Camberwell, who I personally preferred.

Am waiting for my Jetta to go on auction at Pickles,it will be such a good buy for someone,as I treated it like gold...

My Golf is 35% which does look dark, the important thing for me wasn't just how "black" but keeping my insurance, any lower than 35% and your insurance company could potentially cancel or void your cover.
