Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • R32 Specialist in Sydney?

    Hi guys,
I'm currently looking at upgrading to a 2nd hand MkV R32 and am searching around the east coast for one. I spotted a few good ones in Sydney, but I just want to know if there are any places in the metro area that I could take it around to for a thorough inspection. Cheers in advance

These are the two cars i'm looking at right now, please tell me what you guys think

    1 - 2008 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF R32 4-MOTION V MY08 Private Cars For Sale in NSW - carsales.com.au

    2 - 2008 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF R32 DSG 4-MOTION V MY08 Private Cars For Sale in QLD - carsales.com.au

I don't mind the macchiato colour of the first one (actually I think it brightens up the cabin a bit?), and the 2nd one, does it seem a bit cheap? Maybe too good to be true?

... i thought they were overpriced... or just me?

Brand new around 55-60 depending on options... 2 years with 28,000km... i wouldn't pay more than 45... it doesn't have dsg, it doesn't have sat nav.

Who knows... some of them are on there for over 50k, which i think is kinda ridiculous, they are trying to get as much as possible so they can get the Golf R. If you are going to pay 45k+ for a 2 year old R32 you may as well get the brand new golf R for 50k.

thanks for the reply yeah, i think they're a bit much both of then, but i'd only grab them if i could negotiate for 40k or under. Or would that still be over priced? If i got the new R i'd be getting those options too, ie leather, sunroof, reverse sensors. So that puts the price closer to 60k if not more. I've never bought privately before, is it a given to negotiate?

of course its a given to negotiate!

I had my R32 checked out with a pre purchase inspection ($200) at a dealer in NSW prior to me flying up and handing over the coin!

The first guy lost me at "The sponge i use has never fallen on the floor." Sigh...to fail at one of the first steps.

It is definitely a must for negotiations. Not just privately but any 2nd hand car. I'm guility of putting cars on carsales for 5-6k above value, as sellers knows buyers always negotiate, therefore put it up to a big enough price that they can afford to go down a few thousand and still be happy.

For both those cars i think they are worth roughly around 40k. BUT it is all about how much you want to pay and what you think is acceptable... redbook is a good indication of price they are saying 40-44k for those models.

When you read some of those ads, i always question how true it is... they are all immaculate, you have to check the car out first... like one of those above links... it says weekend car only and in 2 years it has done 28000km? So each weekend they go for a 270km drive... who does that?

There are probably a bunch of other stuff you can check... such as tyres how bald are they? considering tyres are worth over 1k, if the last service was done or not, that is like 500. i think you have to check the car out, and plus and minus each detail and work out the price. and see how deseparate they are trying to sell you the car as well... the more deseparate the cheaper.

PS. Dsg gearbox is worth 3000 more as well...
