  • "Throttle body" clean" at 30,000km service for GTI

    Hi there

I recently had the 30,000km service done oon my GTI at one the Melb's VW service centres and they suggested I get the throttle body cleaned out at a cost of $195.

From what I can tell not part of VW's scheduled maintenance at 30,000km service....interested to get some thoughts if this is a worthwhile thing to get done or just some up selling from the dealer service dept??

Hmmm..... there are a few things people try to sell you that really are not required.
Is it running poorly, any codes?

If it was me I would say no thanks.
I have cleaned same after about 60k on cars that have had issues to see if it helped, did on one one MB.

You can do it yourself for $19 if needed by getting a can of cleaner from Subaru.

I had the Subaru one done on my A3 2.0T and i didn't notice any difference to be honest.
Was hoping it may remove some of the FSI carbon build up, but as i said, didn't notice any difference.
Had it done at the 60k service a few months ago.

I thought this was only a problem on the TDI's?

Does the GTI have exhaust gas recycling? I've never looked...

You will get carbon and varnish on any, diesel or petrol. I think you may be getting a big rip there though my friend. If you were complaining of an idle drama or something close to that then i could understand. Not faulty leave it. Just to answer the EGR thing briefly yes a lot of the petrols ave EGR.
Anyway i would have a big think before spending the $195 . Even if it did need it thats a crazy price. Not sure where that price gets drummed up from???

My mech did it for the price of the can.
I had a bit of a rough idle, that's why i gave it a try.

I got this suggested and done with dealer at 12k, 1st service, also $195. I thought that was required for typical service that I can't reject for warranty reason. After I checked with NRMA tech-dept. and other mechanics later of the week, I made a complaint, I then got the credit back, but on next year's service...

Interesting.... I have been looking into this over the last few days then I saw your post.

Here is some reading on Direct injection engines.

I love the guy who posts asking if you can clean your engine with water??? I ll leave that one alone.

Subaru cleaner at 60 000 ks is the go I would say.

                Cheers

Another great product that will do it for much less than $195 is WURTH System Cleaner. I use it, as well as Subaru Intake System Cleaner which is made by Bars, you can also buy it from Ford dealers (Motorcraft R16). It improves acceleration, since it removes carbon build up from the combustion chamber, including build up at valves stems, which improves the air flow onto the cylinders.
