  • Dashboard Rattle

I have a new dashboard rattle developing on my MY09 Golf GTI. It sounds like it is coming from the bottom of the windscreen, almost as if the windscreen has come detached/loose at the bottom. The rattle sound can be heard from inside the car whenever I hit a bump driving or take off in 1st gear with low revs (manual).

Does anyone know how to remove the dash panel that sits between main dashboard and the windscreen? There appears to be a separate panel, however I can't work out how to remove it for a closer inspection.

    Any ideas?

I had a rattle in the same place, turns out it was the wheel to open/close the indirect air vent. Put a bit of weight on the wheel with your hand to see if that that solves the problem.

I got it sorted by VW under warranty.

I'd take it back to the dealer and let them sort it out, it could be any one of a number of problems from loose fuel lines to broken trim. It's unlikely to be the trim between the dash and windscreen.

X2 with Mav's comment... it's still under warranty, take it to the dealer and let them sort it for you.

I recall seeing something similar on another forum and it was traced back to an aircon pipe or the like in the engine bay.

this is off topic, but it has to do with something rattling. Most of the time, when I start up the car, I hear this ticking sound. Like some mechanical ticking counter. And occasionally it goes on for about a minute , 10-20 seconds interval. Can anyone hear the same sound cause when I ask my ms, she said she cant hear a damn thing? Or do I have bionic ears?

Do you start the car with your turn signal on?

Nah.. I get where your are going with the ticking sound. The sound is not like the signal ticking sound. It is very faint, only if I am in the basement (where I normally start up the car) where it is very very very quiet, I hear it. It goes very fast too, like tickticktickticktick, stop, then tickticktickticktick, stop. Something like that.

Lol I was only being a smart ass with my response, but have you noticed if this only happens when the car is cold?

ROFL, initially, I had that impression but it seems too legitimate to be a smart ass comment. And it's always cold in the basement. Even on hot summer days, in the basement it will be > 20 degs.

Does it happen at any other time? It could be the airvents, they make a noise occassionally in my car. I thought something was broken at first.

Probably the fuel injectors, open the bonnet and stick your head under there and take a listen.

                        G'day Mav.,

I get that on start up too ...is it the foreboding of bad things, or normal?

It's the injectors, direct injection is noisy.

Cool thanks Mav. I'll not worry about it then

If its intermittent may be fuel pump or valve tick.
Common on R32s and Ive heard it on gti's but slightly diff tone.
