Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Car Horn - why does it not work when the car is off?

Anyone know why the horn doesn't work when the car is off ?
Can it be enabled by the dealership via the vag-com?

Reason i ask is that i was waiting outside my wifes work when someone trying to reverse park in front of me actually backed into the GTI
I tried beeping the horn before it happend but it doesn't work when the car is switched off.

Luckly the number plate cover took the impact and there are no scratches or marks on the car.

Retarded people who can't park a car properly - gotta give you the ****es eh? I've never seen an option in VAG-COM to enable/disable the horn with the key off?!? I think a lot of European cars are set up like that though - I remember Escorts and Cortinas (and even some Falcons) in the 70's had horns that only worked with the key on.

Actually, I reckon set up a compressor/air tank and a big juicy truck air horn (if you can find somewhere to put it!). That'll work, regardless of key position, and scare the ****ter out of the tool who just about hits your car!

VW Horn wired to work only with ignition on

That's how VW's are wired: certain functions only with the ignition on. Its not a thing you can alter with programming.

You could do a direct feed to the horn, say from the battery. The horn button earths the circuit, so it would then work whenever you hit it.
