  • So a few times now I've gone to start the car(GT TDI), and it starts fine (after the glow plug light has gone out) but then the MFD says 'Engine Fault - Workshop!' or something along those lines and the glow plug light continues to blink whilst the engine is running... turning the engine off and restarting usually fixes it.

    Any ideas what's up?

I had similar but ended up being the air bag harness in the pillar. Repacked with foam by the dealer, all sweet.

Dude. Your DPF (Diesel Particluate Filter) is clogged.

Mine did it once. Take it to the dealer and they can do a manual regeneration for you to burn all the crap out.

            Will be fine after that.

So didn't you do what the MFD said?

I had the identical thing that you mention with the airbag in my Jetta...it almost drove me crazy.
Took 19 months to sort out.Very challenging.
Has come back twice, but lasts for 3 days, and then corrects itself...

                • Hello, I have just got a second hand Golf 2.0 TDI and it sighs for want of a better description when I turn it off, is this normal?

                  • Uh guys I thought there was a particular light for the DPF?

And doesn't 'burning all the crap out' = thrashing the car anyway? I'd rather do that myself thanks!

There is a valve that closes when the engine is switched off and then after a few seconds it opens again and the pressure build up escapes which makes the "sigh".

                      Is this the sound?

                      • Just a heads up VW replaced the rear taillight assembly (the one with water inside) under warranty.

Apparently these things have vents and one was not working

                        • jeez guys,

reading all this stuff makes me a little worried about buying a golf. I would have thought only a select few would have had problems. But it seems to be really common. Like an Alfa? I don't mean insult of course..... But it is scary

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another VW and I would not take this thread as being representative of the true situation.

There are problems (as there are with all cars) for which there are solutions. What you see here is a group of owners who (rightly) want their car to be perfect and notice and highlight the slightest problem. My VW has not been perfect although the problems have been minor, it has no rattles and squeaks and it drives beautifully. My previous four cars were Falcons, one had the diff replaced at 5,000KM, these sorts of issues happen regardless of make.

Most car forums are like this because they attract people who are passionate about their cars and to whom a car is more than just a means of transport.

                            Cheers

                              • Make sure that any uneven gaps between panels sorted out with your dealer in the first 1,000km. They don't tell you that but all panel related issues are covered only in the first 1,000km. I discovered my driver door was a bit off, but car was 1 year old, the answer - too late to claim!
