Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

A bit of a hot topic this one. The owners manual I assume recommends running in for x amount of km below a certain amount of revs. This guy recommends something pretty different:

This is also what i was told, both by the head tech at my dealer (used to race VW, Audi, BMW and Toyota OS) and by a mate of mine who lives and breathes engines....

Go hard son! Mine hasn't broken yet!!!

Mine was delivered with 22 km on the clock so the first 12 miles were already up! At delivery they told me to drive it "normally" so I didn't spare the revs but I didn't flog it all the time, either. Anyway I guess by by the sounds of the new honing techniques that the rings are pretty much seated by the time it left the factory.

I met the VW rep at my dealership once. He told me that the engine will keep getting better right up to about 20,000 km. Mine still has less than 8,000 km.

I've just cracked 6000k's and the engine does seem to be loosening up...rev's more freely and bottom end torque seems to have improved. Although this is a little harder to judge with a couple of mods. It does get driven hard daily....my 2IC has an upstart Mazda 3 MPS which is one quick bugger in a straight line...needs to be put in his place!!!

The only thing i have noticed, is after my wife has had it for a few days (leaving me stuck with a Territory), it will idle rather lumpily for a day or so. Bouncing between 500 & 1000rpm. Is always fine after a day or so. Wierd

The MPS is quick but I don't think they are a match for the R32, especially not a DSG. As for handling, when I drove one it didn't inspire me in the handling department at all, despite what the motoring press wrote.

Strange thing about your idling. Mine is stock and idles at about 650 when warm, albeit a bit lumpy but the stock exhaust is pretty free flowing, I believe. It loves to rev and in Sport mode will not change up until 6700 rpm when I'm on full throttle.

The R32 has lots of idiosyncracies; it's supposed to have something like 70 microprocessors on-board. I think I PM'd you about my front-end noises?

lol the MPS is crap! Goes hard in a straight line, but throw in a couple of corners, some miosture and the need to brake and it's all over! It does have a mountain of torque (380Nm) and is power limited in 1st and 2nd, but it does pull like a train in the mid range...if I'm not on the ball, it'll pull slowly away! It's more about ensuring my 2IC knows his station in life!

Apologies for not replying to your PM...have had a few email dramas (thanks Telstra). The flash i mentioned was part of a VW service pack (not sure which one, but will find out), but has certainly improved drivability on "D". It still thinks it's smarter than the average bear tho and confuses itself still! I spend 99% of the time "S" or manual mode...a lot smoother, better sounding and a lot less frustrating...and bugger the fuel economy!!! There is supposedly a German mob that, as part of their ECU power up flash, reprogram the logic of the DSG. Apparently smoothes out DSG "D" dramatically. Am trying to siurce more info and will pass it on when i know.

Thanks for the heads up on the work done to your car to eliminate the front end noises. I only knew of one bulletin. I will speak to my dealer about the work that you've had done and see where it takes me. They are a pretty good bunch (over looking my mods at service and even hooking me up with the exhaust system) so this should get the ball rolling. I will let you and eveyone else know how i go.

Thanks blur32, I'd like to know more about the DSG flash. Unfortunately, I don't think my dealership is quite on the ball. "D"rive mode can be a bit of a mystery at times but it is good for peak-hour traffic or just zoning out (and those rare occasions when I need to drive my 82 yo Mum somewhere). It would be great to have it up-change 1000 rpm higher...

Lots of people comment on the sound of my R32; and I bet there aren't too many MPS or 130i owners out there getting the same comments.

I'll keep you posted about my front suspension noise. It's early days but the creaking only seems noticeable now when the car has been standing for a while, whereas it was doing it all the time before.

It's good to make contact with another R32 owner in AU; these cars are still pretty rare and probably always will be.

                    Front end suspention noise!

I spoke with my dealer in Syd, and I have booked in my R-32. They claim a few complained similar noises coming from the front suspension so they are replacing the bearings that hold the front struts!. If this means something to you guy's please advise.

I think this is something that we need to start compiling a list of. So far we have bearings (on the struts???), struts, strut mounts, torque settings of nuts on the top of strut towers and probably a heap of other things that no one has posted.

It also seems that various dealers don't know, don't want to know or don't care about adressing this. The more help we give each other, the better of we all will be.

Has anyone checked on any OS forums re this problem?

                      Still love my car tho.......

FWIW I have raced Nissans for many years, and always run the engines in on the dyno.
I came across the following link (can't remember if it was on VWwatercooled or on golfgtiforum.uk)

I asked my engine builder about the running in process.
His answer was "Don't baby it"

I'm going to follow the advice in that link to run in the GTI,
I reckon 20 minutes on the freeway and then it's done.

They also reccomend chaning the opil after 20 miles, to get rid of the break in crap, which also makes sense. Forget waiting to 15000km as per the service manul, at least for the 1st change.

And then drive it like the makers intended.

I got my dealer to do a quick once over and oil change after 250km's to ensure any nasties were flushed out...they laughed but did it for for nil anyway. I think they are used to me now...lol
