  • mkv gti - rattle from front/under the car on take off

anyone ever experienced a rattle that sounds like a loose muffler, (like the sound from an XF falcon, with broken muffler rattling away).. only happens when stopped and about to take off... while letting out clutch in first gear, it is noticeable as gear engages and car starts to move. Doesnt seem to be the exhaust though? Or are they known for this... its a 2006 model?

Otherwise i cant get it to rattle in any other way... anyone?

Most likely to be the fuel line rattle. Do a search as there should be a number of threads on this.

Hey, have you recently done any engine mount work? mine does the exact same thing. its the dogbone & engine mount bolts. I am in the process of ordering the bolts and having them changed. Check out posts on here: http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f15/...ock-40947.html

Mines been doing it for a while.. sorta sounds like the downpipe hangers are hitting the subframe. The dogbone has been checked and seems to be fine although i might get under there and actually pull it apart. I was just gona swap over the the VF mounts and hope that fixes it.

Its not the fuel line rattle.. at least on mine anyway that was more of an idle noise I thought.

Does it bang when you tap the throttle and jerk the car in first and second when driving?

Whats actually wrong with your bolts Nabz? Are they stripped or broken or stretched or what?

timing belt done 10,000km's ago... not sure if this requires mounts to be taken out and put back in... but thats it.

Its not the fuel lines... this was checked, and sorted, but noise is still there.

Not actually a banging sound like CHRISGTI suggests... but more like NABZGTI suggests.... bogbone and mounts to be checked next. When i drop the clutch on take off to exaggerate the sound, it almost begins to squeel.

Well the bolts used for the dogbone and engine mount are called "stretch bolts".. they are recommended to be changed everytime they are loosened, as they can never be re-torqued to the same spec. In say that, some people have used the same bolts with no effect. As soon as I get the bolts changed, I will let you know if there is any difference.

This noise only started happening when I tampered with the engine mount bolts.. before that, it was perfectly fine.. Literally, 1 minute there was no noise... put my engine mount insert in and took it for a drive 20 mins after putting the bolt back in and there was that hideous sound.

Can you feel the vibration or knocking through the footwell? And can u feel any noticeable movement in say 5th or 6th when you're on and off the gas?

no... just on take off when engaging first gear and beginning to roll. Not a knocking sound either, just a rattle. I cant feel it... just the sound.

I'll try load the engine while in 5th or 6th at low revs.

Sounds like the fuel pipe rattle to me. It occurs when the engine at idle just as you're taking off and sometime at idle depending on the conditions. It stops once the car starts moving.
