Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Golf mkv spare key

hey guys, just need some help or advise. Has anyone needed to remake a spare key. Can anyone recommend a place or pro locksmith besides VW to get this done. Its for a mkv r32.
Quoted from dealership $500 for a key which is shipped from singapore, additional $80 for programming

The only place you can get a key re-programmed is through VW as it has to match your VIN.

You can source the key privately for a bit cheaper but in the end it will cost you a similar amount and may not work as well.

reason being, is because ive been looking around on some lock smith websites in sydney and some specialise in cutting automotove keys with transponders and list out big car brand names they deal with including Vw

They can cut the key to match but they won't be able to program it.
        It's all in the wording.

If you are after a "non-active" key then you should be okay, but i believe you can source them on ebay/ecs/oemplus etc.

you can source the remote and the keyblade from ebay relatively cheaply, you will then need to take it to the lock smith to cut it and then vw to program it..

VW_REMOTE_KEY_NEW_BEETLE_CABRIO_BORA_GOLF_4_PASSAT _POLO - eBay Keyless Entry Remote, Safety, Security, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 09-May-10 16:24:38 AEST)

should cost a lot less then what you were quoted.

It's not that easy by a long shot.

            Except it's the wrong key.

This should give you an idea as to the process and complications. I have more detailed information on the process but have no idea what I did with it.

I recently had a Golf key cut without transponder/electronics by Preddy's in Sydney. I just required a key only to open and lock the doors and take with me down to the beach. I still have to hide the key with transponder inside the car to start her up. Cost for the blank key + cut was around $50.

Their website states that they can do transponders for some makes of cars. Might be worth a phone call.
