  • Best tyres for MkV 2.0TDI?

I would be interested to know if anyone thinks there are better tyres than the Conti Premium & Conti Premium 2 for the Golf MkV. I have had both on mine - in that order, with the original Premiums lasting 66k and the Premium 2s now at 52k, but I'm due for replacement very soon. I am thinking that the Premium [1] are better, though perhaps unavailable.

Anyone think that there's a better tyre out there than either of these?

Probably not better, as i haven't tested them myself, but a kumho ku31/ku36 in a wider configuration than the standard continentals might be a bit more useful? eg instead of 225/45/17 (which costs the earth to buy) go for a 235/45/17 (which is much much cheaper). Also going that little bit wider opens your options up further for different brands/compounds too as it is a more common size.

    Cheers

      Not so sporty please!

Thanks ml16, but I'm running 205/60R 15, which are fairly conventional without being 'wimpish'. I may have a look at the Kumho though, as I'm always willing to try something different. Only Continental seems somehow to be the 'default' tyre for VW.

I don't know much about tyre talk, but don't cheap out on them.

I thought I was getting something decent (or so the tyre man said), but I obviously didn't. And with the torque that goes through the front wheels, you want something with good grip (I get wheel spin in second )

I went for the Bridgestone Turanza ER300 (205/55 R16 91V) on my Jetta after two of my original Conti's went out of shape.

I've currently done 25,000 km on them. The local Beaurepaires rotates them every 10,000km for free & they appear to be wearing well.

The ER300's are identified as a very quiet tyre which is the reason why I bought them.

When compared to the Conti's this is certainly the case. I haven't been disappointed the road noise is definitely much better.

Plenty of grip & softer riding.

However, the Conti's are a maginally better handling tyre.... so it all depends on what you're after.
