But is there any real difference between these and the ones for $50 on eBay ex USA? Some of them come with the Ross Tech software!
Traditionally I have always bought the best full optioned product, only to find that the cheaper variants do exactly the same but with a few less features, which are never used anyway.......

I guess it depends what you want it for. First of all, with a mk5 you'll need a canbus or micro-can cable which a lot of the eBay ones are not. I managed to get myself one off DealExtreme, but I think they have since pulled it. Mine will not complete a full autoscan and I can only go up to VCDS version 805 - anything after that doesn't recognise tha cable. My cable will allow clearing of codes though, so if that's all you want it for - a basic error code scan an clear, and maybe some basic logging - then it might be the way to go. But for anything more you'll want the genuine article IMO.
