I cant decide which transmission to get, the DSG has paddles and is quicker, but the manual is a better driving experience so i hear. What would you guys recommend?

I love my DSG and have sworn by manuals all my life and being up to half a second quicker over 400m is bloody awesome!
BUT every now and then I wonder if I would have preferred the manual as the shift is such a precise direct feel and those pedals are perfectly placed for heel toe action.
Just consider what the majority of your driving is.... as I do love the DSG so much more when I am in the daily grind stop start traffic. And at least once a day you cant help smiling at the loud fart noises out the tail pipe on shifts and the stupidly quick gear changes

The DSG is brilliant in most situations, however I didn't like how it interrupts things. You know what it's like, you've decided to go into manual mode and are enjoying the drive, just you and the machine, when the DSG butts in a says "I know, I know! Let me do this I know what you want and can do it better". You then realise that your moment of enjoyment has been interrupted by a German software engineer, and you lose focus on enjoying the drive as you tried to work out what the hell Mr DSG decided was good for you. It is as distracting as Adsy's sig!
Not a big deal in the scheme of things, however for what I wanted my GTI for, I decided a manual was the right choice for me.--------------------------

If it was just a normal automatic vs the manual i would choose the manual. But the DSG is really fast and it has paddles and i've always wanted flappy paddles. I'm leaning towards flappy paddles. It's just a matter of finding a white GTI at a dealer with DSG and Leather and i'll be happy.

Back to DSG *clears throat*
Hooba - You said that the software of the DSG steps in at tits... sorry... at times and does what it wants? I think you would be referring to kicking down a gear and not holding the one that you are in correct? If this is what you are referring to I am sure you know about the switch under the accelerator pedal?? Do you..
I find manual mode is fine and only overrides if you press the accelerator down hard enough to compress the under accelerator switch. Th only other time the manual mode is overridden is when you are decelerating to a stop and it will gear down for you as you have left it in like 5th gear at 15 kmh for eg.Last edited by adzy; 25-04-2010, 07:45 AM.

There are more intrusive gearboxes out there than the DSG though... its a bloody top gear box overall though

VWs dont bounce of the limiter anyways so you couldnt do that in a manual either. They just get massive fuel cut which kills all power.
As mentioned already the DSG is a nice piece of kit. Nothing can shift faster so its brilliant for sprints to 100.
Having said that.
Give me a manual box any day. Its just more fun (in my opinion). Simple as that.
Ill leave the DSG, ESP, EBD, TC for the playstation generation.

yes pop over to the mk6 thread and you get plenty of opinions, mine is drive both and see which you like the best,
I drive my GTI in too much inner Sydney city peakhour and still won't swap it for a DSG, a manual GTI just has more of a sense of occasion to it,
just wish the manual GTIs popped like the DSGs.
cheersmk VI GTI, manual, reflex silver, basic
