  • 15,000km Service Cost from Each Dealer Outlined

My MKV is coming up for its first service so I thought I would ring around and see what prices I get off the bat from the various dealers for the 15,000km service. I assume these prices would translate roughly to the other services as well.

    $390 - Glen Waverley
    $363.70 - Campbellwell
    $368 - Essendon
    $380 - South Yarra
    $440 - Bayside/Barloworld ROFL
    $385 - Werribee
    $385 - Berwick
    $340 - Burwin

It really is luck of the drawer and thus pays to shop around. I booked mine in at Burwin as I also bought it from Burwin.

    Hope someone finds this interesting.

Oh great, Burwin is right near my place so that looks promising.

Jessv3 does that website give you any certified dealers who charge that price for a service?

Even if you ignore the quoted price from what i can gather the website is accurate with what is needed at each service (seems spont on with my hand book) so if only a oil + oil filter change are required at 15,000kms this couldnt take more then an hour, so 4.5ltrs an oil filter and hours labour (which is being generous) is $340 :|

For what these cars cost, in my case an R32, the few hundred $$ is a small price to pay for peace of mind and a good dealer relationship.
That in itself is worth it weight when warranty issues 'may' arise.
You can get a service elsewhere but if (prob not) they do a computer scan, resets if required, updates etc, replace recall/warranty parts etc, free coffee . loan car use just isn't worth the hassle at least to me.

Go and price a 504.00/507.00 spec oil and you won't end up with a lot of change out of $100. On top of that you have a filter and so forth so I'd like to know how the service can be done for $144.

The dealer I use highway charges me ~$155 for a oil and filter change service which is very reasonable given the price of the oil and I paid $300.50 for the 1 year 15K service. If you look at the checklist they go through there is no way it's performed in 1 hour like that website claims.

Most dealers charge between $100 to $140 per hour. The 504.00/507.00 oil is around $80-100, filter is around $30, shop supplies disposal another $5-10.

I'm sure Ultratune will be happy to put some no standard bulk oil in your car and charge you $144 for a oil change but I'd rather have people that know what they're doing perform the servicing because it will pay off at resale time and if repairs have to be claimed even if outside warranty.

You mean this stuff? 1Liter Castrol SLX 5W-30 VW 504 00+ 507 00 Motor for us common people its about $13/ltr + shipping to buy.. so about $60 and im pretty sure vw pay a lot less considering they bulk buy it. Oil filter $30, so thats $90 in parts.. hmm so $250 in labour..

And who said anything about ultra tune?

Did you even bother to look at that link? It's a German listing and not comparable to Australian prices. 20 litres of that oil is over $300 from the distributors in Australia. Ask the German guy how much for shipping to Australia.

There is a markup on parts and this includes oils as well, they don't sell you anything at cost. I guess all the equipment in the workshop is free? The training that the staff go on don't cost anything and free replacement staff are provided during the training? The loan cars don't cost them anything I guess either. If you don't like the price of the servicing you should have done your research beforehand and picked up a toyota corolla instead.

And who said anything about ultra tune?
That's about the only place you will get the service for the dollars you quoted.

$340 isnt that bad but there are other independent VW/Audi pros out there who will beat that easily.

I am always amazed at the difference in dealership prices although I suppose its all about the location, overheads etc

If your worried about your 15k service cost, wait until the 60k one comes around

                      .
Obviously you're much better at making assumptions then you are at reading, just under the buy it now price on the ebay link you would see the words postage if you press details it even gives you the cost of the delivery to Australia:

                      Postage and handling:

                      EUR 17.00
                      Extra items EUR 1.80
                      Delivery: Australia

Why would it not be comparable to Australia? do you think the oil is made here? and that vw/ or the distributor doesn't import it from overseas? I only used that ebay link as an example to show you that the oil is accessible to the general public and is not as sacred as what you are making it out to be.

Excuse my ignorance but is that not what the hourly labour rate is suppose to cover?? I mean its not like that mechanic at vw is getting paid the $150/hour into his own pocket, things like training and tools, over heads etc are all apart of that hourly rate. Mark up on parts is just a revenue raising exercise.

If you don't like the price of the servicing you should have done your research beforehand and picked up a toyota corolla instead.
Yes there we are again with the assumptions, the Gti is actually the 3rd VAG car ive owned not that its really relevant or any of your business.

The point i was getting across is people should actually be aware of what work is done at each minor service and how much "mark up" is being put on a simple oil change and check of everything. It would be ignorant for you to pay top dollar just because its a dealer and they "know best"..

He's not going to be able to send it to Australia for that price, ask him for a quote and see what he comes back with.

How do you know if it's old stock or counterfeit? Are you willing to risk your warranty to save a few dollars on oil purchased on ebay?

Why would it not be comparable to Australia? do you think the oil is made here? and that vw/ or the distributor doesn't import it from overseas? Whoopie. The GTI is AUD $24,000 in the USA but you can't buy one at that price in Australia and there is no point in comparing that price to the price in Australia.

The oil is only available in Australia via distributors in 20+ litre drums. It's not available off the shelf in 5l containers so your link to a German ebay listing is really pointless, what matters is what price you can buy it for in Australia.

Excuse my ignorance but is that not what the hourly labour rate is suppose to cover?? I mean its not like that mechanic at vw is getting paid the $150/hour into his own pocket, things like training and tools, over heads etc are all apart of that hourly rate.
And what do you think the hourly rate does cover? Didn't I just go over that? You're making an assumption that the whole service can be performed in under an hour which it can't if it's done properly.

Mark up on parts is just a revenue raising exercise.
What do you think dealers are in business to do? Do you expect dealers to sell parts at their cost price?

Yes there we are again with the assumptions, the Gti is actually the 3rd VAG car ive owned not that its really relevant or any of your business.

As I pointed out I can get an oil change from my dealer for ~$155. The 1 year / 15k service is however a lot more than an oil change.

If you don't see the value in the dealer servicing by all means take it elsewhere and don't assume that people are stupid just because they are willing to pay a small premium to use their dealer.
