Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Timing belt..

    Hi,

Before I get flamed for starting another timing belt thread, ive done the relevant searches on here and apart from this confusing thread:http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f15/...lar-34938.html There doesn't seem to be any up to date talk about Timing belts.

I can only speak for my car which is an 06 MK5 GTI it has 105k on it so i called vw and they told me my timing belt was due now. I thought that was weird considering my service book says 120k. Anyway lucky for me I have a friend who works in the service department at a vw dealer so I asked him to do the timing belt & water pump this weekend and he told me that its definitely not due till 120k and that the only reason why VW recently changed the service schedule was because customers were complaining about the cost of the 120k service as the spark plugs and the brake fluid are due at 120k as well..

Has any one else heard the reasons behind why vw changed the schedule? I thought maybe it was because they had a few problems with them snapping early so they moved it forward but my friend claims that they have never seen a Mk5 Golf come into the shop with a snapped belt before 120...

Can't speak for the Golf specifically, but I'd feel I was on borrowed time after 100K.

Case in point: A relly had a BMW 3 series (Apart from rear drive not all that different, really) that had reached its belt-change point.

Being hard-up at the time and despite my urging (even offered to do it for him) he couldn't (didn't want to...) spend the money on the belt replacement.

Kept driving it and about 123000K the belt let go.

    $5000-odd later....

i went to barloworld five dock few weeks ago to get some parts and ask the service guy how much for a major service 4yr/60k, he said 980. then he said add another 1400 on top for timing belt and water pump. so i think the dealer just make up their own mine to change the belt and pump whenever they want to steal your cash.
looks like noone can say the real time to change them
by the way mine only a 2.0fsi not even a GTI

Hi, Can you let me know where your getting this information from? unless your a vw mechanic who has a copy of the current service schedule (which was revised last month) then your post is speculation much like the previous thread around timing belts.

Im trying to find hard proof that the belt really does need changing at 105k.....

IMO 100,000km. Most vehicles would be at this point, as said, if you dont and it snaps ur out of pocket even more. Your probably going to change it at 120,000 regardless, and if you arent keeping the car more than 200,000 km, when you change it doesnt change the fact your paying for it atleast once.

I would theory that if you were doing 100,000km a year you could probably get away with quite a lot more miles. Im guessing the 4 year bit is for material deteriation, as we know rubber goes hard in time.

Interval really depends on a number of factors.

Manufacturer's specified interval -Quality of drive belt - Belt stretch/tensioner still within range - Interference or non-interference design

Timing belt interval on my petrol 3.5 Jackaroo is 160,000ks - I changed it early at 10years/150,000 , the belt was perfectly sound with no perishing or cracking, and minimal wear on the ribs. It was however, stretched and the tensioner was at max extension. It helps knowing that the engine is non-interference, so a broken belt is just that - no engine damage results.

This prooves that the timing belt intervals are make model and engine specific rather then the generic 100k (despite it being the median).

it will be make and model/engine specific... and as for the cost if it snaps... not necessarily expensive.
Am ashamed to say but we had a Daewoo Lanos shopping car for a few years and its timing belt was meant to be changed at 90,000k's but was told it was done earlier ... ending up snapping on us at about 107,000k's ... cost us under $300 to repair. no damage to engine. discovered that the timing belt had not been done at all.

so is mk v a interference or non-interference design?

Ok 105 or 5yrs after 05 for the GTi, 120K or 5yrs after 05 for the Pd Tdi, Pog Gti 105K or 5yr. Mk4 90K or 4 Yrs. V6 passat 120K or 4yrs but lets face it its good to have it done around 100k for peace of mind. The new belts were revised. And a bit of confusion on the PD motors is because some have oval crank pulleys and others round.
Also prudent if pricing or saving up for such job you will need all the rollers, relays, tensioners and water pump. all done and dusted at the same time. Happy days
