Steering wheel controls stop working ?

As the title says, I can no longer change the radio volume, the MFD display, the horn doesn't work, the paddles for the DSG on the steering wheel also doesn't work.

The stuff on the stalks, indicators, wipers, cruise is all OK.

1. The only thing I have had done was a wheel allignment last Friday morning, but could that break the steering wheels controls ?

My first instinct on that is a plug has been disconnected. Not sure how they work on a MK5. I'd call the alignment place and ask if the wheel was actually moved?
If they did I'd be surprised if there wasn't an airbag light too.

Disconnect the car battery. Wait 10 minutes. Reconnect the car battery.

This should resolve the glitch.

I called the wheel place, and they did not go anywhere near the steering wheel, all work was done under the car.

I'll try this battery thing tonight, fingers crossed.

Hi mate,

I recently had a diagnostic scan done on my car prior to the ecu stage 1 remap I had and the scan revealed "Steering wheel error intermittant fault with DSG up shift paddle" Maybe call past your dealer and see if they'll scan it for you. Let us know how it goes.

I think I dis-connected the battery last night for 15 minutes, but it didn't help, the problem still exists.

The reason I say "think I dis-connected the battery last night" is that while disconnect the dash, clock, radio etc no longer worked but somehow the interior light still worked ? The battery in the R32 is located in the boot and there's a junction box under the bonet that has lots of wires leading in and out of it. I dis-conected the red lead but there is more than one red lead.

1. Can someone explain what is the best way to dis-connect the battery in an R32 ? (pictures or links would be helpful)

The battery in the boot is the best place to disconnect. There are two ways to disconnect the battery; 1) Open the black plastic cover that conceals the disconnect relay etc (this is used if you have an accident, it disconnects the main power feed whilst allowing other systems to stay powered up) and undo the nut that holds on the lead from the battery (10mm), wrap it up with electrical tape and close the cover making sure it can't short out and 2) Remove the battery cover and disconnect the positive terminal again making sure it can't reconnect with the terminal.

Option 1 is the easiest but the lead from the battery is live and unfused so you want to take extra care, Option 2 the lead is dead and you really only have to make sure it can't contact the positive terminal.

Last night the Air bag light came on.

This morning I managed to disconnect the battery properly, left it off for about 20 minutes, but after reconnecting all issues remain.

Looks like a trip to the dealer is required.

Back from the dealers today, needs a part, they'll call me when the part comes in, and another trip to the dealer is required.

All covered by warranty (so far).
