Transmission Service (6spd Manual)

Hi,

I admit i haven't checked the user manual just yet but does the 6spd Manual in an MK5 GTI need regular servicing? (i.e fluid change & relevant filters). Reason I ask, my car has 105k on it and i was thinking of doing a fluid change on it because it feels clunky in between changes. Im not sure if this is normal for the gearbox or not but im use to driving european cars where the gear changes are like butter rather then notchy and unsmooth can any one confirm if this is normal and when it should be serviced?

Hi Jesse,
It probably wouldn't hurt to change the fluid.
Are there filters on the golf?
Would be handy to know, coz at 84000, I'm now starting to think about doing at least a fluid change soon down the track.

I find mine doesn't lend itself to particularly fast shifts and that's where it does feel a bit notchy.
Mine's a TDI though... so they could have a different 6M to the GTI too. Different ratios at least, surely?
Does your's do ~10km/h/1000rpm in 1st and ~1900rpm at ~100km/h in 6th? (purely an estimate)

I wanted to see how much of a difference double clutching can make and I'm happy to report that it does feel velvety.
Not particularly sporty, but ah so smooth! Synchros contributing to the notchiness then perhaps.
Or just a placebo effect as caused by my slower shifting. But I digress...

My GT TSI has felt notchy from the moment I picked it up. Can't remember if the demo car I drove felt notchy.

Car has been serviced twice by the dealer and both times they haven't commented on any issues with the transmission.

The only car I've driven that had butter gear shifts was a Hyundai. Felt no resistance and I attributed that to all the gears losing their teeth hahah

Hmm it looks like the notchy feeling in the 6spd Manual is normal from the factory. I only really have my previous car to compare it too which was a B5 Audi A4 1.8T and the gearbox in that was much smoother and easy to change faster.

Peter, im fairly sure I sit on about 2400rpm at 120kph so im guessing the gearing is a bit shorter in a GTI. I would assume they have the same internals though so the feel is probably the same. I'll just have to learn to live with it, it certainly feels the most noticeable when trying to do fast changes or when the car is completely cold.

Yeh mine has felt the same. Every now and then it gets "stuck" in 3rd gear and I have to pump the clutch a few times for it too release. When I took it in for the 30k service I mentioned that I thought something was wrong with the clutch. In the end they never got around to looking at it and I've re-booked the car in for a follow-up. But since then a mate of mine suggested that it may have something to do with the synchro's in the transmission. Not too sure exactly what that means but I'll be asking the service depart the question at the end of the month...

I remember the gearbox on my mk5 being quite notchy from new. After about 15,000 - 20,000kms it really seemed to smooth up a fair bit though.

Redline transmission oil seems to be the solution for the Polo GTI guys.

Ok, they replaced the synthetic G'box oil with mineral oil under the 35a7 recall. Turned the notchy box with the crunching 2nd into a box with smoothness like my mk4 2.0L sport had. Fixed the box right up good and proper like. VERY happy.

I wonder if the same recall was placed on the MK5 Gti's ..probably not, i might get the fluid changed at my next service.
