Aux input 3.5mm sound quality

Just tried out the aux input using my iPhone. I found that I needed to crank up the head unit's volume to get any decent sound. When I said crank up, I mean - 300%-400% higher than if I am listening to CDs.

Does this sound (pardon the pun) right to you?

I've found that I have to turn it up a bit more than usual, but not that much.

Make sure your iPhone's volume is set to around 70-80% when you plug it in. Keep in mind that the iPhone remembers volume settings for different audio profiles as well.

This means that if you have the volume set to 80% before plugging anything into the headphone socket on the phone, the volume won't necessarily be set to 80% after you plug something in. It will be set to whatever it was last time you had something plugged in.

Under the Aux-In volume setting on the unit, set the input volume to 1.5v (Low)

No issues here (but in a Skoda).

Have the gain(??) set to 2 (of 3 settings). Have the iPhone on 90%. Volume on about 15 - 22

I had my aux. input installed through Northfield Car Sound about a month after I bought the car.

Ok, call me thick. I looked through the manual and I found nothing about setting the aux-in volume. In fact, I only found one reference to the aux input in the entire manual. I think I pressed every conceivable option on the head unit and I don't see any options that allow me to set the volume.

So where do I find the volume setting for aux in?

I have a 2008 GTI and have the same problem - the iPhone is really quiet. I haven't been able to find any AUX level settings either. Was there an update to the stereo that adds this feature?

I've given up trying to get decent sound from my Ipod. I have the same prob from RNS510 C. Considering the price of it, you would expect a better manual than the crap VW have produced. My book was printed in 2007 and is almost useless. ABPO.

I have some good news for iPhone users annoyed with the low volume via Aux In: You can buy a dock -> 3.5mm adapter for only a few bucks and it will increase the volume significantly. I use this one.

Don't worry about the USB plug - You can use that to charge your phone, but sound is output through the 3.5mm plug.

Spiky has hit the nail on the head - the iphone doesn't know whether it is headphones or line out, so it assumes headphones. Buy that cheap one from DX that he linked - it is not quite MDI sound quality, but it is a line out instead of an amplified (and turned down) signal so a LOT clearer, and should solve the volume issue too.

Ordered one of those the other day for the Mondeo. The Ford uses the 3.5mm for sound & the USB for display & control. Ford want $60 for a similar cable.
