lol well i only listen to the radio as most of my trips are rather short.

And where will I get to all these places without a car?

Bus, train, TAXI!! I rely on my car alot as well, didn't realise there are people more lazy than me.

I think I am extremely lazy. When I have to take the train, I make mum pick me up, drop me off and pack me lunch (I don't need my laces tied because I have those nikes where you don't need to tie

lol obviously you've never experienced Sydney's train system or bus system. It is so inefficient its not funny. Peak hour = train/bus full to the max or late.

I used to catch a train to school, because the school knew full well the train system is always screwing up lol for work, can't exactly take that risk.

To be brutally honest, i'm all for public transport, when i go overseas, i don't rent a car, i catch public transport everywhere (this includes work, where they offer to pay for car), because their system is reliable and is actually quicker than car.

instead of starting a new thread, i just want to ask a question about the alarm system on the gti...

How does it work? is it sensors or what?

Reason i asked was because tonight i parked my car in the garage, left the windows open as i was just stopping real quick, lock the car.... and 5 minutes later, i dived in through the windows to grab my phone which was in the cup holder... and the alarm went off....

Along with other sensors the GTI fills the car with soundwaves and monitors them for disruptions. So what you have described will caused the alarm to go off.

You can turn this off temporarily before locking the car (say you want to leave a dog in the car or something) by pressing the button about 3/4 of the way down your B Pillar (you may not have even noticed that it was there!). From memory the sound wave generator (speaker I guess) is high up on the B Pillar on the passenger side.

Check out page 44 of your Controls and Equipment manual. It suggests that even a mobile phone vibrating will cause the alarm to go off. Pretty cool for a stock alarm.

By the way - I don't always keep my manual inside Last night my partner was complaining about how she still can't drive the car the way she likes using the DSG gearbox... she's used to (and prefers) a manual gear box.

I got the owners manual out to re-read it and see if there was any information in there to help her out. There wasn't... but she's read this thread (http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69511).

If you're interested, her complaint is that neither manual mode or automatic mode let her drive how she likes. In auto mode the car can be hesitant to take off when you put your foot down... and when it does take off its a lot faster than she expects (especially if you hit the kick-back button).

However - in manual mode its much easier to forget what gear you're in than in a traditional manual. I think she has a point as when you physically change the gear stick into a given position for 6 years or so it becomes second nature to keep track of it. Now we need to check the display in the dash regularly.

Personally I've found myself driving around in auto mode a lot more than I expected. I can use the accelerator pedal to moderate the speed predictably to say, overtake cars and drive up steep hills, without the brute force of hitting the kick back. I'm used to driving a powerful car more than her however.

I also suggested that if she wants to speed up temporarily she could drive around in auto but then just tap the "-" paddle. Driving in D seems to have an emphasis on economy and if you want to take off quickly the gear box does introduce a delay whilst it recognises your intentions and makes changes to suit.

Anyhow - end rant ... it made me sad that she wasn't enjoying the car though....She drives it more than me and we sold her car to buy the Golf....she misses her car (a 94 civic VTI ...also a black hatch)...

hmm thats very interesting, i guess you do learn something new everyday. because in my lockup garage, i usually just leave the windows down (its a bad habit).

I don't think that would be a problem too much - unless something flies in or you leave the garage door open and there's a breeze or something. Maybe the soundwaves would fille the whole garage

yeah i totally get where she is coming from. There is alot of getting used to. I think for us men, we find cars easier to adapt, females tend to do everything in habits even driving.

I don't like the "manual" mode much either, it switches gears automatically, and like she said you can't drive how you want to, for a manual (well for me) my hand is always on the gear stick, it is just a natural motion while i'm driving, car and body in one sort of thing. With the pedal gear box, no clutch... it is not the same.

The only time i really use the pedal is to have a quick burst eg. overtaking or something.

talking about missus, my missus love stealing all the stuff i like... when i got the 135i she stole it from me, now i got the pirelli, she decided to steal that from me today!! Same with tonight, she went out to have dinner with her friends and me with mine, we were both at home for a little bit, was going to show my friends my new toy, after i had a shower, went down to the garage, the car is gone once again!!!

about the Civic, they are a very nice car, much better in comparison to today's civic (well of course the current one is "better" but for the age back then? the civic was really good to drive, had a civic for my 1st car, i think it was a 93 one, for a 10 year old car, it was really fun to drive.
