  • Check engine and EPC light came on!!

Hi Guys, was on my way back from a night up the coast tonight and after coming through the harbour tunnel the Check engine light came on, soon followed by the EPC light..... anyway into limp mode the car goes so I had to carry on to a safe stopping area... it was missing badly and jerking as well.... sounds like it could be the O2 or Lamda sensor I think.

It did the same thing about a week ago but after turning the engine off and on again it went away but not this time!! she's not a happy camper at the moment, anyway she's booked in for a checkup tomorrow.

Would have been a good move to get it scanned after the first episode. I'd be surprised if it's a probe TBH.

Don't forget to update us with what they find.

UPDATE!!! got the call today with the reason for the Check engine and EPC coming on!!!!! guys, all it was....... SPARKPLUGS!!! one had failed....
Basically the guy was saying because the 118tsi runs quite lean due to the fact the injection is only injecting the exact amount of fuel to keep emissions down, they tend to run lean and buggar the odd plug....
HOWEVER, there is a god, he has reflashed the ECU to solve this problem... there is obviously an ECU upgrade out there.... guys, ask for it!!

            Sick Golf

            Hi there,

Just thought I'd share my experience with you.

My engine light started flashing, and was idling a bit funny, so I brought it in to my local VW place. They said an ignition coil failed so they replaced it. When I picked it up it was still idling a bit funny. They said they're aware of it and would like me to bring it in again to do some more diagnostic work on it to fix the problem. Well I was super busy and didn't have time to fix it then, as I was organising my wedding.... anyway came back from honeymoon and the engine light came on solid, and went into limp mode. Took it back, they did a compression test on the cylinders, one had a low compression rate, so they had a look. There was a peice missing from the piston ring, they checked the other cylinders, nothing wrong with them. They're replacing all four pistons, and injectors and currently waiting on parts from Germany. They've had it for a month......no loan car

Lucky I've got a mate sorting me out with a loaner. Anyway wouldn't have thought this could happen with a 12 month old auto GT Sport with 30,000kms??

Sounds like the APR flash needs some updating too?

It seems there may be a problem with 1.4l twincharger engines chewing up pistons/rings. There is a thread about it in the Mk 6 sub-forum (IIRC lots of different cars at lots of dealers in lots of states, and as usual VWA are trying to keep it all hush hush):

Yeah, just had a read of the MK VI probs. It's a shame this could bring the reputation of the TSi engines crashing down to earth! I was certain I would hang on to the GT for a while, but after this experience (still going, they're getting parts from Germany and maybe arriving late next week. That will make it about 6 weeks now in the shop!), I'm not so sure. Acutally considering selling it and getting a GTI, as this may effect re-sale down the track!
