and to top it off, a nice set of track spec semis look waaay sexier and more aggresive than road tyres

I've been runnig KU31's for a while. They were good compated to the Contis, seemed more sticky.
Since I've moved the same tyres to a wider rim with a little more stance, the car handles nicely.
I've only had them on for about 10,000 kms, they are starting to show wear around the edges so will likely have to replace a pair before 20,000 kms. 1 track day coming up, they may die pretty hard in 1 day, I'll try to update this thread afterwards.

My Conti's are SOOO raped now!! I am just trying to hold off on getting some KU36's until I go to the drags one more time
Will send them to the grave with some big burnouts at the staging lights.
As we know any street performance tyre will delaminate big time around a circuit however the major damage happens after about 3 hard laps in a row... I found if you let them cool down after a few laps they will last a lot longer.

The Bridgestone RE050As don't have this problem, hence why VW are using them for their driver training.Originally posted by adzy View PostAs we know any street performance tyre will delaminate big time around a circuit however the major damage happens after about 3 hard laps in a row--------------------------

I think I may have used the wrong term, I dont mean delamination to the point where the nylon weave is ripping apart including peices of tread, just the rubber starting to crumble away on the tyre surface.
Even the best of tyres do this but some are much more capable than others.
RE050A's sound good.. would have loved some RE070's but I dont want to sell my kidney for one!

The above is actually a good sign the tread is overheating too, its a combination of compound/design and the fact that the pressures are generally too high (they are designed to be run at those pressures). The largest difference is in the construction of the sidewall, performance tyres of this nature are designed with reinforced sidewalls that take the cornering loads, they are designed to be run at lower pressure than you might expect and actually respond to pressure changes. Its all about finding the middle ground as far as alignment and pressures go.
Both edges? both tyres? The Ku31's have very low tread on the outside edges as new, the tread pattern is just like that, its kinda rounded off. Because of this its pretty important to keep an eye on pressures which effect edge wear the most. What happens is the tyre rolls over too far in cornering, ends up riding on the edges which have the least amount of tread, so premature wear occurs. What size tyre and what sort of pressure are you running in them? if its both edges and is happening on the other tyre (on the same axle), tends to point the pressures are a little low. For spirited driving you really need to bump up the pressure 1-2psi just to compensate.Originally posted by noone View PostI've been runnig KU31's for a while. Well I finally replaced my Yoki AD08's, they lasted very well, around 24,000k, better than Pirelli Rosso's!!
I have fitted some KU31's and far out they are a MUCH smoother ride than the AD08's, I guess this makes sense but it really is quite a difference.
The AD08's I think did end up suffering from heat cycles, because at the end of their life they were not so grippy. The KU31's are better off the line than the worn AD08's. Of course the AD08's required warming too, the KU31's don't really need much.
Overall, I think I won't get another set of semi slicks. If I do more track days in the future, I will consider a second set of rims and tyres, this is probably the best way to go unless you track your car more than say 4-5 times a year.

I had RE001 on my starlet GT a while ago.
They griped pretty well in dry, not bad in wet.
I used that mostly on hillrunning and maxxed out the grip on most coners.
They last quite alright for the way i used them.
My mate used same tyres on his starlet GT as well, but not driving as hard as me.
after 15000km, still half left. also, they were just 195/50/15
I rated them good preformance street tyresMK1 Golf convertible
