  • GTI Engine Oil Change

Is there a way of changing the oil in the GTI without purchasing a oil drain adapter tool, i.e. http://www.samstagsales.com/vwaudi.htm#webspecial

US$140 for what appears to be a $5 part seems expensive.

Or is there a cheaper version somewhere.

Why couldn't VW locate near the top of the engine like BMW, where you can replace the oil filter standing up.

    Yes...

Just in case you guys need some help with it. Use only for reference Edited on 7/28/09 for a cleaner filter housing removal Tools Jack & Stands (I wouldn't recommend the stock jack if your physically going under the car) Ratchet; 19mm & 1 1/2 or 36mm Standard 1/8": Oil Pan 5 qts of Oil...

Doing it without the adaptor is no problem, it just gets a bit messy. But read the thread above which now includes a home-made cheat.

      Also...

OE, OEM & Genuine replacement parts for European cars. Your online source for VW, Audi, BMW, MINI, Mercedes, Porsche, Saab & Volvo parts since 1995.

      (Third from bottom)

Dunno if it is any good, though, but might be worth a shot.

hmmm should I buy the tool or not...

I suppose I can open the nipple and drain out the oil without the tool, but will be messy...

My concern is that is nipple doesn't snap back into the correct spot so it's sealed. You won't know until you start the engine.

One other thing, where's the cheapest place to get OEM filters?

I wouldn't bother with the drain tool mate. I've changed the oil in mine half a dozen times now, and its easy.

I pushed the nipple (!!) in once by accident, it's easy enough to pull out and you'll notice any drips well before you start your engine.

If you don't mind a bit of oil, just open the casing without draining the nipple. It's not too bad, you can catch it if you're careful - just have a few rags on hand.

I think Tim can sell you the original filters quite cheap. I wouldn't worry too much about cost, convenience is more important. They're dirt cheap if I recall (I bought a heap all at once).

Thats good to know about the drain tool.

I'd rather do the service myself, by the time I drop off the car, pick it up, etc, I could have done minor services myself and know I've done a good job.

I'd bought a bunch of filters for Astra Turbo.. I still have about 5 of them.

yeah same here. I do the major services (or rather, the book services) via a VW garage (non dealer) but I still like to change the oil myself every 6 months.

It can be a bit messy, but nothing to really worry about. Just make sure you get the correct size socket to remove the housing, I got mine off ebay I think...
