They're a distributor, they provide support and the product to DEALERS throughout Australia. Surely someone who claims to operate a business can understand the difference between a distributor and a dealer?

You have no idea. IIRC the tool to flash the earlier mark 6's (1.4l) cost each of the dealers $3000 or thereabouts and how many mark 6's do you think they had to reflash to pay that off? And the mark 6 is just one out of many cars out there.

$3000? thats not much. Considering they charge $900 more than in the US. Take all the "r&d and service" cost, they would still make a fair bit of profit. Do the math.

We're comparing apples with apples. $45,600 is the on road price in QLD for a 3 door DSG GTI with no extras. That is the price you pay before any discounting (if any).

The price listed for the USA is the price you pay before discounting.



But why? We've already been over the tax situation and that doesn't account for it and you pointed out they sell less VW per capita than Australia so why the difference?

I think you are arguing for the sake of arguing. Cars in Australia are generally more expensive (tax). A BMW in australia is probably 20-30k more as well.

For the last time APR USA sent out three staff and set up in a workshop, shipped up a rented 4 wheel dyno for 3 weeks and organised new Mk 6 vehicles along with others to customise maps for Australia along with create new ones for the Mark 6's. How much do you think something like this costs at the end of the day? $100,000? $200,000? Free?

So it is the APR USA people now doing the tuning.

They do all that not just for 1 stage of the upgrade. They use those dyno and cars to test other upgrades as well, which they make alot of profit as well.

My example was ECU Upgrade Stage 1 for the golf Mark 6 their profit over US price is $900+ so 100 cars would be $90K, plus all the other different chips and upgrades are tested on those vehicles they bought, which in turn would make a similar % of profits.

Wouldn't they do this same procedure for the UK? Hong Kong? Japan? or whereever? if they do it in Australia they would do it in other countries as well, because Australia is nothing special.

So why only Australia that have to bear the costs of their procedures?

You would be better placed taking it up with VW and you could save yourself nearly half a new car price if you can convince them that they shouldn't be charging double what they charge in the USA.

Ever heard of trade agreements? most countries would trade for free with US, as they are such a big power nation, there would be export charges and import charges for a car to go into australia. export charges varies from 5-25% where import charges are 10%+10%, on road costs etc as well.

I think as people have said you must vote with your feet either way. I would get the APR tune at american prices tomorrow, but I can't stomach paying twice what it costs everywhere else on the planet just because I live in Australia.

If you can't see that twice the price for the same thing is a bit rude then you really must be an APR fanboy.

Go do some research. There is 5% import duty on cars to Australia.

The USA also has specific requirements for cars sold in its market with regards emissions,lighting and bumper regs. This would invariable add costs to the manufacture of cars destined for the US market.
