  • A little bit of smoke

    Hi All,

I have a MY08 GTI thats done abt 8,000kms on it and I just found out that when I accelerate hard say reach abt 5,000 RPM, the car gives out a little bit of smoke in the exhaust. Its not like spewing out smoke but like 'fires' it out a little.

I'm guessing that would be the oil that it is burning. Should I be concerned? has anyone else experienced such an issue?

(I know its very hard to tell as your usually looking at the front and you can't see the back but a mate who was behind me just let me know)

Thanks for any input you guys can provide.

    - l3lazin.

That's normal, the air fuel mixture is rich. Look at the exhaust on any GTI and you'll see the coating.

Just make sure the smoke isn't white or blue. If it's black, it only means you're running a richer fuel mixture (which is a safety measure). If you get your car tuned it will help a lot with the smoke.

No it won't. Turbo VWs run with an A/F ratio around 11:1, and you can't change the standard tune by turning a mixture screw.....

If you tune the car with an ECU flash it will blow even more black smoke because the turbo will pump even more fuel through as you accelerate harder.

There will be some blue smoke from the oil the engine consumes mixed in with the black smoke from the petrol.

All normal - it's one of the nice things you can do to falcadore drivers - blind them with GTI Turbo Exhaust Goodness.

Yes it will. The REVO SPS 2 (SPS Select Plus) hand unit, will allow the user to control the air fuel mixture. Dumbing it down a little.. Too much fuel in comparison to air will result in more black smoke.. lower the fuel slightly, you get less smoke.. get the air/fuel ratio perfect, you'll get next to no smoke.. lower the fuel too much, and potentially bye bye engine.

Some of the tunes do (or used to) run pretty lean (I think bluefin used to looking at some EGR's a while ago) so may drop a little less smoke but as a general rule I'd say that pretty much all tunes run richer than stock.

The last Bluefin MK5 I saw in Brisbane could have been mistaken for a diesel on boost. Way too rich.

A puff of black would be normal, sustained smoke would be wrong. Also, if you have opened it up in a while, a quick trip to the redline would clear some build up out the back.

Bluefin dont run lean boss, more on the rich side to keep the temps down and if reqd the software on the bluefin can be changed to suit, via your dealer. If you run Bluefin and its a bit rich dont hesistate to contact your selling dealer

REVO runs leaner that stock.. resulting in better milage at the same time when not driving hard.
