Service is due at 4 years or 60k. Around $800-1000 for a manual and add an extra $400 for a dsg.

Depends on the dealer Mav. Just had mine done and was ready for the estimated $1100+ price tag. Was pleasantly surprised when it came in at just over $800!

Did you get the DSG service? What about brake fluid?

I think the plugs are due on the FSI at that service as well and they're in excess of $100.

That's what the service book says to do.

If you don't want to use a dealer there are few places that I've seen recommended. One of them is European Autotech - http://europeanautotech.com.au

Might be worth talking to them regarding pricing etc.

We charge around $900, for a TDI, including DSG service and brale fluid. Looks like we're pretty competitive.

Made sure I got a copy of the invoice for my records, and yes, they did the lot......or at least it's recorded as being done!!!! (And I'm glad I've got the TDI if FSI plugs cost that much!)

                  Labour rates vary rediculously.

A dealer an hour up the highway from us is charging $100 more per hour.

I am in a similar situation as OP. It's a 2005 Golf 2.0 FSI. It's about 4.5 years old and done 54k. I have been quoted $660 by a VW specialist for major service including all the filters and brake fluid, and $990 for timing belt and water pump change. Does the price sound about right? and is changing timing belt and water pump required at this km? My service schedule says it's renewed every 120,000km and it's checked at 60,000km.

For the timing belt replacement interval it is time and km’s which ever come first. If you brake the timing belt the repair bill will be much higher it will be in thousands not in hundreds of $$$. So you have to make the decision if the risk is worth it to you.

It also depends how the car was driven, I see some belts on not the VW cars last 10-12 years but much less than 100km's (usually driven by pensioners)

I had a major service done at the dealer, car 5 years old and 105,000 on the clock. Service + water pump / timing belt and had to have the brakes done ... all up $2500!!

I think the new timing belts are a lot better than the older ones , they got rid of the hydraulic dampener and added 2 more idle rollers . The biggest issue is that most of the waterpumps are either leaking or starting to leak after 4/5 years . The MK4's had issues with impeller breaking , the mk5 has issues with leaking outside !

The newer timing belts are a far superior design, but VW are giving them a 4 year/105,000klm lifespan in most cases.

My partner's '04 Golf 4 timing belt is looking VERY secondhand at 93,000klms. I think I'll be adding that to the to-do list.

The $990 sounds fair. The parts are fairly expensive, with the water pump (genuine) at around $200. The job isn't that labour-intensive. The last one I did took around 3 hours without rushing it.
