Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. The GTi will be sportier, true but don't be surprised if you miss some of the mx 5 attributes.
that is very true, it was an awesome 1st car, it is still an awesome car. It is really fun to drive, the handling is amazing as it is a mx-5 afterall.

BUT the enjoyment is not the same as when i first bought it... in my early 20s now, what i want and need is slightly different... i plan to buy a place in a few years time... so this would be my last big investment sort of thing before all my money going into a house.

As much as the convertible part is great, but i hardly use it now less than once a week, at first it was fun (like you said wind in the hair good feel), but can't exactly go to work with messy hair, unlike before i drove to uni lol

So a golf gti is a great alternative... i've driven both, personally i don't think the GTI is that much "sportier", it is slightly faster, but in terms of handling mx-5 do win, but golf afterall is 4 seats, it is much more practical for the long term.

I thing i have a slight problem with the golf gti is they are everywhere!!! i mean yes some of them are normal golf but they look the same and they are EVERYWHERE!!! i swear in one day i see 30-50 of them on the road, every single set of lights i see at least one.

GTIs are very common in Sydney!

For the price youre selling your car for you could find yourself in an R26 like mine Its worth a drive at least. I was sure i was getting a GTI until I decided to drive a couple of Renaults, not saying they were better or worse than a GTI though... just different.

The seller of the black one in Syd is very keen to sell but I dont know if he'll let you drive it at your age.

well your not wrong about how common they are, since i decided to buy one, they just seem to appear everywhere!!!

I thought about the Megane R26 as well, but i don't really like the back of it (no offense). I tested one of those a few years back when they first came out, it was a very good drive.

It is different to the golf gti... i guess i'm more into the golf gti is because it is more like an everyday car, especially a gti with leather seats and sat nav. R26 is more a track car and is very standard on the inside, which i don't think would last in the long run (as in i would want something more sophisticated later on)

Why is it trolling to advise him to try something different? or to say GTIs are common? Maybe you should look around, cos they are very popular in case you havent noticed.

I was in the same position as him only weeks ago so why shouldnt my advice be valid?

No offense taken mate, not everyone is gonna like them! Just suggesting you give the competition a go before making a final decision. The Golfs are a very good car overall so you wont be disappointed, its just good to rule out every other alternative before jumping in, you know?

yeah of course, i do like it how there are less of them though. the r26 is definitely in my mind, but less out there meaning less to choose from, i guess.

i'm doing a whole bunch of research... even considered getting an a3.. but too old man-ish for now. the gti does have a good balance in terms of comfy and speed.

The ford focus xr5 turbo (BRAND NEW) is 35k...

                and even a mini cooper r56 S

BUT there are both positives and negatives for the golf, the demand is there, therefore the price is much higher than first thought.

You don't own a Golf, you're on a VW forum, your'e bagging Golfs because they are popular, you're trying to steer him away from a VAG product when he has stated he wants to buy one. I know GTIs are very popular, in case you haven't noticed I own one, maybe you should pay attention.

                  You're Trolling, bloke.

No doubt you're secretly regretting buying a quirky vehicle that has no resale value, and wishing you'd got with the strength. That's why you troll a forum that you should have zero interest in.

its alright Gerhard... i don't mind some 2nd opinions. R26 has their pros and cons.

Anyways just a quick question as well... 3 doors or 5 doors?? same car just one with 2 extra doors? or are there any other differences?

And price difference brand new?? so i can take that into consideration when negotiating.

Oh some information on how much extras cost new as well... eg. sat nav, parking sensors, bluetooth etc... so i can also that those into consideration when negotiating

your dealer should be able to give you a document with how much all the extras cost. I personally think 4 doors are better, and i thought you would too considering you've already had a 2 door car.

i thought you were trying to buy 2nd hand thou.

a brand new GTi packed with extras would be pushing over 55k i think.

I remember in 2008 there was a demo GTi with all extras at brookvale bmw, they wanted 52k.

what is your closest vw dealer?

The "2 or 4 door" question is one only you can answer really. It all depends on your situation and what you want from the car.

Personally, I am planning on keeping my GTI for quite a while (5-6 years is the current plan) and as such I wanted a 4 door. My 2 previous cars have been 2 door and I was tired of the awkwardness when wanting to take more than one passenger. There's also certainly potential for dogs and kids in the next 5-6 years so I wanted to cater for that.

Many would argue that a "true" GTI is a 3 door version and to some extent I agree - but if you feel that you might appreciate the convenience of a 5 door for any reason then I'd suggest you start by looking there.

Of course - you can still put people in the back of a 3 door - its just not as easy or convenient.

                          Defensive much?

He said that they were everywhere, and I said they were common in Sydney. Thats really bagging it .

Maybe you should re read my posts before putting your guard up and see what I think of Golfs. Tell me exactly how I was bagging it?

Like I said I was in his exact position a couple of weeks ago so get over yourself.

i'm looking at a 2nd hand one... i was more referring how much the options cost before, as the price list on the brochures are for the mk6, not sure if the prices were the same back then compared to now.

Eg. if i see one on carsales, with sat nav and 1 without sat nav with similar KMs... if i know the price of the sat nav, i can work out what to offer etc.

definitely not really looking for a brand new car, it is out of my budget/don't want to spend that much. Demo is right on the edge of my budget... i would say if i sell mine mx5 for 30k my budget would be around 40-45.

my local dealer would be barloworld mascot, i live in alexandria

yeah i guess, both have their pros and cons... in my opinion i don't mind either... but in my head i have always thought that a real hatch is 3 doors as well, i grew up with my dad driving a honda civic (the much earlier version, the better ones).

But hey i'm always the driver, so i won't be climbing lol and i always find the 5 doors is slightly pushing it... oh well i think the 3 or 5 door question is down the priority list... i think i will still look at year, kms, extras... and if i have to get a 3 door just to fit into my budget i wouldn't mind at all.

and i'm not planning on having kids and family yet, not for quite sometime, so i guess i plan for myself first lol

but once again to both of you guys, thanks for the input.
