  • Ipod adapter for the RCD500

Apologies if this has been covered before.

I have an MY07 gti with a stock RCD500 and want to connect both my Iphone and Ipod nano.

What hardware do I need and what work is involved to do this modification.

I'm not really to concerned about functionallity, I just really want to play my tunes

    Cheers

    You can either:

1 - Install the AUX input socket that comes with MY08+ GTIs. This will let you plug in any audio device but won't allow you to control the device from the stereo controls.

    OR

2 - Buy the MDI add on to your stereo along with an iPod --> MDI cable. The MDI needs to be purchased through your dealer and can be installed by them if you don't want to do it (fair enough). The cable can also come from the dealer however apparently you can get them cheaper on eBay.

Total cost for option 2 is anywhere between $350 and $500 (I believe)...depending on if you purchase installation services.

See this post for some more details:

MDI requires a third generation headunit to operate.

So is the RCD500 not a third generation unit, reading the link as supplied by Maverick it would appear not.

If this is the case, then is the only option to install an AUX input jack as Axis suggested. If so, where can I get one of these from?

Or do I need to go out and purchase a RCD510 unit?

Or you can buy an rcd310 reasonably cheaply ie. $50 mostly and get an MDI for that. RDC510's are a lot more expensive 2nd hand.

I have the basic ipod adapter that plugs into the CD changer and TBH if you are going to spend some money may as well get the proper thing, the ipod kits for the 2nd generation dont display the track info and are, to be blunt, pretty crap even though it does fulfil the purpose of playing tunes from my ipod.
          currrently... MY10 GTI | DSG | Candy White | Sunroof | 18's | BT | MDI
previously... MY08 GT TDI | DSG | Reflex Silver | Sunroof

If you have a full height MFD get the dension gateway 100. It's essentially the ipod screen in your dash, all controlled from your steering wheel. They are $300 and will work on an RCD500 as I have one

            the carkit company sell them

I only have an RCD500 with IPOD adaptor but only a Half Height MFD. I know that I cant control the IPOD from my stering wheel controls, but does it also mean I cant control it (e.g. change tracks) from the actual RCD 500 Head Unit?

Yeah you can change it with the track buttons on the headunit.
