Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Rear wheel bearing for Golf

    Hi all,

I have a rear wheel bearing that has gone on my 2.0 TDI .. VW wants $450 for a replacement ..

Does anyone know an online supplier of these? or know where else I can get one cheaper?

    Cheers all!

      Hi Bazzle,

Looking at their site, they dont support the BKD engines as these were never delivered to the USA.

I dont know if they therefore would have any wheel bearings for my model?

My money is on them all being the same on normal Golfs.

Unless it Specifies R32, they'll all be the same.

I have a noise coming from the rear and I'm not sure what it is.... What does the sound of a failed or failing bearing sound like?

A bit of a whine or whirr that may change note as you load up when turning.

Thanks Bazzle, I'll have it checked out as that's what it sounds like to me.

The car is due for its 60k service in a month or so but it runs out of warranty before then so I'll have to get it looked at sooner.
                    Regards,

A lot of people suspect a wheel bearing when it is actually scallop type wear on a tyre (particularly on a VAG car's rear wheel). A quick way to tell is to swap wheels front to back and see if the noise moves with the tyres (or increases/decreases).

A noisey wheel bearing will generally have a lot of free-play in it, too.

So, while you've got the car jacked up, grab the wheel at 12 and 6, and try to rock it in and out. Also, turn the wheel slowly, and listen for a rumbling noise.

Hi Spoddy, long time no hear! As you've mentioned running out of warranty, not a bad idea to buy the VW extended warranty package. With a bit of haggling you should get it for around $1,400 for an additonal 3 years but needs to be purchased before warranty expires.

                          Cheers

I backing this post, my Jetta has had road noise when the tyre tread is low on both front and rear, different road surfaces have different sounds.

Worth a try swaping tyres around.....

                              Hi George,

It has been a while, I look and learn regularly tho .
I'll seriously consider this even though most studies show paid extended warranties are a businesses biggest profit earning product... just that we are dealing with VW here; not because they are unreliable but because they encourage us with expensive repairs...

Greg and Bug, I'll rotate the tyres on the weekend and see how it goes.

                              Cheers and thanks,
