  • Massive jolt while driving, loss of power and complete shut down...

    Hi there,
Wondering if anything has any idea with the following problem... very scary experiance!

Driving home at midnight last night from Shepparton to Melbourne on the Hume Hwy, out of nowhere while travelling at 100km/h I had this massive kick/jolt as for a second and then the car lost complete power. I pulled over and the car died. I attempted to start it with no luck. So I took the key out, back in and the car started again. Note that I had the cruise control on. About 5 min later with the cruise on, the same thing happened!...

Again, took the key out and the car started. This time I didn't use the cruise control and made it home. Has anyone experiance this problem?

On another note, I am looking at getting the tool where I can run in a diagnostic to check the car for any faults. Any suggestions where I can get one from?

Sorry forgot to note the car: It's a 2007 Jetta 147kw 2.0 model...

    Thanks!

Jetta 2.0T is DSG only. Sounds scary.

Yeah the DSG model. Very scary experiance when you are on the Hume Hwy and it's pitch black. It could range from anything from electrical as the problem occurred twice when I had cruise on, but not the third time when I had it off to perhaps contaminated fuel?... My wife who was in the car reckons the car actually went a tad quicker while in cruise control before it died...I have booked it in to be checked on Friday so hopefully nothing major!

Did the prnds lights flash when it happened?

VCDS cable available from http://www.eurospeed.net.au/ in Melbourne and http://www.hp.net.au/ in Brisbane that I know of. Others around too.

          Ask for an 'HEX+CAN' usb

            Hi Bazzle,

No lights flashed at all on the dashboard. When it happened I straight away looked for any warning lights...

Not that I am aware of. I did look under the car just in case.

Was the "thump" an actual physical jolt or was it possibly a loud noise from the ICE (stereo) ? Just asking as IIRC there was a fault in some VAG ICE units that made a very loud noise like soemone had just shot a high powered rifle or something. If you had a wide spread electrical failure (and it reads like you did) this could have happened as part of the electrical problems.

Nah it was a physical jolt. Almost like someone has pressed the brakes. Basically 5-10 seconds after the jolt, the car died in terms of engine/power but I still had full electrics working. The car is in the garage and it seems to start ok and runs fine as someone mentioned it could be fuel contamination but I don't think it is... so don't want to drive it until I need to take it to the mechanic...

Took the car today to Volks in Abbotsford and after a day they think it could be the mechatronic, but are not sure? There were some fault codes so they cleared them. Apparently they need to wait for VW Aus to get back to them about the problem in the mean time I will drive the car for 2 weeks and take it back there for a week to possibly order and fit the part... Hmmm what type of things can you do with a vag com as I am thinking of buying one?...

Update - March 2: The mechatronic is the problem and is being replaced. Depending if there is a part available in OZ or needs to come overseas will determine if I get the car back this week or not (very hard to be driving behind a Polo hire car vs. the Jetta).
