Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • DSG/Diff Whine

I have a TDI Jetta which has the 6speed DSG and the other day when I was driving it I noticed a very fiat whine on takeoff from a standstill which sounds like its coming from the gearbox/Diff area. To hear it you have to have the radio off and it only makes the whine once you have started moving in 1st and a little in 2nd gears. The car has only done 23000km's. My missus drives it most of the time and when I do drive I do notice if something sounds different. It differentially didn't make the whine when I bought it new.

I would like to know if anyone else has heard a whine with there 6DSG before I take it back to my dealer for a check?

    Thanks.

never had any DSG boxes whining at all at our place ...........VW............I would say check your tyres but you say it only happens in first gear? Check you tyres for uneven tread wear especially on the inside edge.............

Mine had a big whine in first gear and a very slight bearing type noise at around 80kph. I took it to the dealer and it was replaced a few days later.

Get to a dealer and make sure they fix it one way or another....it is not normal.

(of course make sure you are certain it is not tyre noise or your dealer will think your a git!!)

I also noticed it made this noise in park when you just picked the revs up off 1000RPM so I took it to my local VW specialist this morning and took him for a drive and gave him a listen. It is not the gearbox. It's the turbo making a noise. Since it has bed in it has started making this noise. He said he has had a few customers have had the same concern about this noise. some MK5 2lt TDI engines get this noise with the Turbo.

At the moment he said the noise is ok but if it gets any worse it can lead to problems with the Turbo. He has replaced a couple of turbos in the past. So I will just monitor it and see what happens.
