  • Factory Repair Manual for Mk 5 & DSG

Are they obtainable and for how much? Maybe a group buy?

I know a great deal is made of the 'advanced' technology and specialist knowledge required but i still like to do work myself instead of paying $130 per hour after tax plus i enjoy doing it!

Can't see that the DSG is any more difficult to work on than the VW095/098, M1 automatic transmissions. Well, actually i overhauled quite a few AD4s as in Renaults but the inside is VW/Audi and i'm not impressed with the quality of its design. They all seem to break at about 100 000km. At least the parts are reasonably priced as they are obtainable from independents. I asked about part prices for these boxes at a VW dealership and i almost had a heart attack. Hope the DSG isn't in the same league

    Cheers

I would be interested in one as well, i have a workshop manual for my MK3 golf, and want to get one for my MK5 GT at some point. Will watch this thread with interest.

You can get service and maintenance manuals by VIN.
Also SSP (Self Study Programs) about a variety of topics.
For 21 Euro you get 24 hours access which is plenty of time provided you have everything set up exactly as per the Step by Step instructions. Which I didn't do the first time and couldn't get everything.

The VIN related stuff can be copied / pasted / printed while the SSP's can supposedly only be printed to a hardware printer. Although if you look at this http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ad.php?t=27691 Logger makes some good observations.

You'll probably find yourself buying and making all the special tools to get the DSG apart, and back together.

Hope you are wrong about the special tools. But the Germans have a reputation for making things difficult for the DIY. Why on earth not have a dipstick in the transmission? They did the same with the AD4 transmission (not put a dipstick in but at least there is a filler tube so i can use a threaded rod as a dip stick). The filling procedure on the AD4 is very similar to the DSG's

I don't want to break your heart, but yeah, some special tools are required.

In regards to a lack of dipstick, if you owned VWAG, you'd want all the work on the cars you sell to come to your dealers, wouldn't you?

Have you checked ebay? I did a quick search and found multiple matches.

                  Heres just a few:

The 1st and 3rd ones are DVD sets, that will cost you around $10AUD delivered!!

Also, if you're looking for a DSG specific user manual, I don't think they exist. Last I researched this topic, the DSG gearbox is regarded as "top secret" info according to Volkswagen, and they do not release information about its core specifics. I've seen people on forums who have had their entire DSG gearbox replaced entirely by Volkwagen (12k worth), and not had to worry about getting it 'fixed' because even the dealerships do not have access to the DSG core information. Not sure how true it is, but that's what I've read on multiple forums.

                    Thanks for the links!

Ours is a 1.9 Diesel; and one of the DVD sets seem worthwhile but i'm after the DSG specifics.

I sort of understand that VW wants to maximize the $ from customers but i find it a bit rougish. If a customer stuffs up a repair they'll get the work anyway?
For $12,000 it would be worthwhile to pull a broken one apart and learn? After all, it's just a transmission and not a device that splits hydrogen with minimal energy input.

Luckily, our DSG is still healthy. It's just that i thought about preparing myself especially since i had bad experiences with VW automatic transmissions. Also feel a little guilty for recommending the car with DSG to my daughter.

The DSG has revolutionised the "automatic" gearbox. I'd highly recommend the DSG gearbox if somebody asked me.

I've had REVO Stage 2 for the last 20,000km, and it has been faultless thus far.. I even got the REVO DSG upgrade done and that's a huge positive difference also. The day it breaks down though, is the day I'll be really peeved off lol *touch wood it never happens*. I have plans to go Stage 2+ in the next few weeks

Information on DSG oil changes are readily available, but not cracking one open and servicing specific components. There are people who do have experience with cracking them open (specifically for LSD purposes), and they'd probably be the best to speak to if you're keen to try.

Agreed. It's nothing like automatic transmissions of the past. In fact, it only shares the BASIC operating princples of a manual transmission.

Get hold of the Self Study Programs for it, and it's variants, and understand how it works first. There's a lot of measuring involved in setting up all the clearances for the clutch plates, etc. I have all the resources to do them at my fingertips, and even I'd be apprehensive about pulling one apart.

All of which makes the extended insurance option a sharply focussed question.
