  • A friends 6DSG just failed!!

Hi guys, just found out a friend of mine who has the 2006 model 2.0L turbo FSI with the 6DSG had the gearbox fail!! was travelling along at 70km/h only for the DSG to drop to 2nd gear of course dropping the speed instantly to 40km/h..... luckily she was close to home. Limped the car to transmission specialist who deals with DSG's (unsure who at the moment), fault coded it and sure enough it appears the mechatronic unit has failed and will cost around $4500 to fix.......the car has only done 70,000km!! Hmmmm, wonder if the VW US deal will come here and give us all 100,000mile, 10 year warrantes??

Mines done a full box and a mechtronic unit.

At 70,000k it should still be under warranty...get to VW dealer ASAP!

Bluto, Is the replacement mechatronic unit on your car for a 6DSG or the 7DSG??

This is why I keep thinking the 3yr extended warranty for $1157 on my 2006 Passat with DSG is a very cheap insurance policy. Not to mention all the other things that it covers anyhow that could go wrong and being one of the first DSG (V6) Passats in the country, I am sort of expecting something to go wrong eventually.

Is it the mechatronic or the temp sensor issue?

I would still talk to a respectable dealer 1st.

I'm surprised anyone is a DSG specialist outsite of VW for a car relatively new.

                  Still scary though.

Forgive me, but doesn't the FSI come with manual or standard 6 speed automatic transmission? Also, isn't it non-turbo?

The OP has stated it is a turbo petrol and they do come with the 6DSG.

This doesn't answer my question. There appears to be some confusion also about what model year we are talking about hear with OP stating 06 and another one stating 08. If the latter, the FSI came with a six speed automatic geabox - non-DSG - and no turbo.

As I said, someone with more knowledge can correct me. But for the time being, my guess is that the gearbox that has failed is a regular run of the mill auto, which might also explain why a non-VW mechanic was consulted.

I concur. Another reason why I feel we're not talking about a DSG here.

VW should be able to help the customer out. Depending on the circumstances (service history, age, and kilometers), they may replace it under warranty.
