  • JP's MkV in the wars again >: (

    Got a phone call at quarter past five this arvo, and it is the missus saying she has had an accident. Bugger

    Then she says that she had a friend with her, and her 8 month old daughter. Double bugger

    So the Golf has two adults and two 8 month old girls in the back, and someone rams them from behind. Both women have significant whip lash, and both babies seem to be OK, but all four are going to the docs tomorrow for a check up.

    The missus was stopped to turn right off a main road at a T intersection, when she got cleaned up from behind in a 60km/h zone. The other driver did not even hit the brakes. Witnesses say that there was no brake noise, no squeeling of tyres to stop.

    My car (that I just got back from the panel shop for hail damage)

    Not sure yet how much structural damage has been done yet, but it seemed to drive OK (but I was going very slowly)

    The other car...

    Apparently the elderly woman was taken straight to hospital for severe whip lash and chest pains (which probably didn't start until after she realised that the car she hit had two babies in it - sorry, but I'm still a little bit mad about the whole thing )

    Anyway, sh*t happens, and I wouldn't have any other car than the golf. It scares me a lot to consider that this time last week, the missus and the bub were trucking around in the beetle.

        the bumpers are made of such tough plastic that they usually just pop back into place. the rear beaver panel is what takes the hit. My car didnt look much different to that damage wise when i got hit and there still managed to be 3.5k worth of damage.

        Lucky everyone is ok cars can be fixed. people arent quite so easy to repair

          Couldn't agree more! Unfortunately the full set of symptoms of a whiplash type injury can take a few days to manifest. Usually will involve the obvious such as neck pain and reduced ROM but may also include headache, vision changes or referred pain into one/both of the arms. Hope all goes well for her. Very glad to hear that the little ones are OK.
          I didn't realise that the Golf's were so tough in a rear end collision. Impressive!

            Tough plastics

            Good to hear that there's no serious injury. If the offending driver was doing 60kph (no braking?) then the damage is light indeed. I would say the white car will be written off. The Golf plastics are amazingly strong and some may remember my account of hitting a wallaby at considerable speed without leaving a mark. I was convinced that I would get out of the car to see bits hanging off.
            I hope that the wiplash is minor and that all recover well.

                Thanks guys.

                Just going to the med centre to get the crew checked out and everything documented. The other baby has bruising around her abdomen, which is of concern (it was just noticed this morning). The mum doesn't drive, so we are taking her and the bub with us when we go to see the doc.

                The golf is going for assessment this afternoon - so we shall wait and see what the verdict is. I did spot some areas of concern this morning on the bodywork. The gaps between the trailing edge of both rear doors appear to be different, as does the gaps around the hatch on either side. Not sure if it is my imagination, but the assessor will have the final say.

                Will keep you posted.

                  Just got back from the Doc, and all is good - phew

                  Plenty of rest and panadol - nice.

                  So I've got a favour to ask...

                  Can you guys (with 5 doors) check all the gaps between the doors and panels on each side of your MkV, and compare left and right gaps.

                  I was advised by the assessor that all the gaps on the left side were consistant, and all the gaps on the right side were also consitant (which I do agree they are). However, the gap width on the left do not match the gap width on the right - which he said was OK

                  Does this not mean that one side of the car is shorter than the other side?

                  If most 5 door golfs are like this, then fine - whatever. But if most/all other 5 door golfs have the same gap measurement ALL ROUND, then Huston, we have a problem.

                  Your input is greatly appreciated.

                    OK, just measured mine for you and I have a 3.5 m/m gap between the rear of the doors and the body, both sides. I hope this helps you out.

                      Glad to hear everything checked out well at the docs. Amazingly little damage to your car it seems.

                      I have often seen different size gaps in many other builds of cars. However I would be interested if the assesor put it up on the hoist. I would imagine that there would be some tell tale signs in the chasis if it got bent, even slightly. Did your wife have her foot on the brake at impact? Not that that would make much difference I suppose.

                        Thanks guys

                        As far as my wife recalls, she was lifting off the brake to go through the intersection. This explains the discomfort in the right shoulder (as she was steering with her right hand and changing gears with the left).

                        I have spoken to the local VW dealership, and they reckon that the difference in size between the gaps (left and right) are within specified tolerances. So there is no problem.

                        The panel shop is well aware of my concerns about the gaps and some other stuff that got damaged. So I will see what the result is after the work has been done.

                        If all goes to plan, I will get the golf back and not notice any difference between now and before the accident

                          Just picked up the black jewel late last week - YAY !!!

                          It is so nice to be back in the MkV again, and so good to have all that turbo diesel goodness again - Double YAY !!!

                          Although, the missus is so used to flogging the hire cars to get any kind of pick-up/acceleration, that I had to remind her to slow down quite a few times on the trip back home

                          Belconnen Auto Refinishers did a top job (again), and I would fully recommend them as their service and product are excellent. The MkV was returned to us in as new condition – top stuff!

                          I am not a superstitious person, but I hope that as far as the rule of threes go, this is the last of any kind of accidents for the little MkV. Fingers, toes, legs and everything else crossed

                          Did I mention that I was happy to get my MkV 2TDi back ??? ...

                          ~~~~
                          Oh, forgot to mention, the whole rear suspension cradle and linkages had to be replaced as did the rear half of the exhaust system. New rear bumper and sub-frame, and all new moulds in the tail gate (sheet metal fixed and painted) and in the boot.
                          An entirely different story from what the pictures tell...
                          So far she drives like nothing had happened.
                            Good result!
                            Mate.... you exude enthusiasm. It's good to have such a dieselophile on board
                            Looking at the photos I would never have thought the damage was so severe. Makes you understand why we pay so much for insurance, don't it?
                            Tell your mrs to take it easy on the loud pedal. Wouldn't want the front to be next
                              the mk5 golf is like the 3-5 door hatch version of the hummer! with a turbo
                              it weights like a hummer but it has the turbo to compinsate but its built like a hummer which means its a tank!
