  • Leaking seal?

    Hi people,

What is the purpose of this part of the engine on the right side of the dipstick?

Behind this part in the second pic there is a grey part of it and I spotted some very, very tiny oily type splatters around there over a period of time. I put a mirror behind it and it looks like there is a possible seal leak as shown in the third pic.

The car drives as it should, nice and smooth so no issue there. Engine oil level is normal. The car is under warranty and will take it to VW next Monday. Just curious as to what it could be and if it could become serious in the long or short term. Btw, Happy New Year to you all!

    Thanks and regards, NS

Hi mate, that's the EGR valve. A small oil leak generally indicates that the EGR needs to be removed and cleaned of burnt oil/carbon. They all do it, and over time, the idle will be come a bit rough, the engine light may come on, and the car will become hard to start.

Would the EGR likely to clog up sooner if you do more city driving than freeway driving? The car has travelled about 7500 km mainly city driving so far.

Thank you very much for the speedy reply, much appreciated.

Yeah, it is possible. Same goes for using the incorrect oil. It's a fairly common problem with them. As they're getting on with age, we've been cleaning or replacing quite a few lately.

In my case it's definitely not the oil as I am using the VW synthetic Longlife III 5W-30 and the car is only just under one year old. Looks like I'll be taking it for a run on the freeway more frequently. Thanks again for the advice.
