Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mechatronic replaced - DSG now a brilliant drive

Bought a mk5 GTI DSG 2nd hand. Thought it drove rubbish. Car would drive like it was learning how to drive manual. It particularly had bunny hop issues when car was well warmed up and from slow starts.

Went through a few forums. Seems some people just accepted it. Car was due for 1 year service and I was ready to fight for a fix under warranty.

Dealer said they would investigate but it was entirely up to VW Australia. Dunno what that meant!

Got a call and they said - yep, they will replace the mechatronic under warranty. Well that was easy, no fights.

Had to wait a bit for part to arrive and lock in a date to fix - 2 day job. Had to wait over a month.

I have had the car back for 2 weeks now and it drives brilliantly. It behaves now like I thought it should. I really cannot understand how the original owner put up with it for almost 1 year!

    Good to hear mate

Some people simply don't know any different and are ignorant to the fact it's not meant to be. I know that if it was my car, I'd be back at VW the next day getting it looked at.

What is the story regarding warranty of mechatronic replacement with a modified MKV? Will they put it down to modification or will they still repair it if it's faulty?

Mine seems to drive mine but the throttle and movement of the car seems quite touchy in reverse so i'm not sure if that is a symptom of a mechatronic problem?

Mine was replaced just recently. Same symptoms.
          Smooth now.
Burwin motors are mod friendly as long as you have done it right (depends on the mod too I suppose) Call in and see Jim or John.
They have access to the VIN numbers affected

My dealer has never asked me if it is modded, I have never volunteered the info.

Could I ask how much the actual mechatronic unit costs from the dealer?

our dsg bunny hops if the car is reversing up a slope, or crawling in traffic on an incline. Bit embarrasing sometimes. Also, after a long trip (>1hr) on the highway and then doing some urban driving, our dsg is noticeably more clunky in its gear changes. Will have to see if I might be able to get a mechatronics replacement as well. Apart from that, LOVE my Jetta to bits!!

mine got done today. Apparently because my gearbox was a warranty box it was missed that the Mechtronic unit was faulty. It should never have gone in apparently!

                    Still, drives gooderer now!!

Yep, sounds like what I had. Get it replaced.

Just came back from a holiday involving 2-3 hr stints. No problems whatsoever with the new unit. I'm loving the car.

Is there an online register of affected year/VIN's?

Done. I'll give it a couple of weeks for the mechanics to get over the post-holiday blues, and I'll get it looked at.

Great to hear it's now driving well.

Also, trying to accelerate quickly from stand still results in a reeeally slow take off which I think is dangerous. Did your dsg have this problem, and is it fixed now?
