Just replying to some of the stuff in this thread off the top of my head.

Sportline, Edition & Pacific are the ones that have body coloured handles etc.

Edition & Pacific models were introduced in 2008.
Edition kind of replaced the Trendline models and added a few things. The Edition is available with a 1.6L petrol engine or 1.9L turbo diesel. The petrol came with either a 6 speed tiptronic (regular automatic which can be shifted manually) or 5? speed manual. The diesel came with either the DSG (twin clutch "automatic") or 6 speed manual.

Pacific replaced Comfortline & Sportline. It has all the stuff like fog lights, sporty seats, dual zone automatic climate control, auto dimming mirror, auto lights + wipers etc. It was available with a 2.0L petrol engine or 2.0L turbo diesel. Like the Edition models the petrol was offered with a 6 speed tiptronic automatic or a 6 speed manual, the diesel was offered with a 6 speed DSG or 6 speed manual.

I don't know much about the older Trendline/Comfortline models to be honest because the Edition/Pacific models came out when I started getting into VWs.

The Trendline models have the black handles etc and don't have steering wheel controls... that's about all I know feature wise

The Comfortline has the black handles etc, auto lights + wipers, semi-automatic air con and it has steering wheel controls.

The Sportline added things like different alloys, fog lights, dual zone climate control and better seats etc over the Comfortline and of course the colour coded handles and bump strips on the front.

Cars are advertised as "tiptronic" instead of just "automatic" because it means they have a manual shift option either by using the gear shifter or with paddles on the steering wheel (note: the normal Golf models don't have paddle shifters).

This is my Golf's shifter. If you push it to the left when it's in Drive then it goes into tiptronic where you can shift manually by pushing/pulling the shifter.

One thing to keep in mind is that the petrol models take premium 98 fuel.

The older models had a 1/2 size MFD (multi function display) whereas the newer ones have a full size one.

This picture is from a Sportline

    This is from a Pacific

From memory ESP (Electronic Stability Program) wasn't standard until 2008 either unless a safety pack was optioned... I need to check this but I'm sure I've seen a couple of 2005ish Golfs advertised as having a "Safety Pack". Until ESP became standard they only had plain traction control. I drove a 2007 Comfortline TDI (stands for Turbo Direct Injection, not Turbo DIesal) which only had ASR (Anti Slip Regulation aka plain old traction control).

Hope that helps a bit. It gets pretty confusing.

It does really depend on what you are after in a car and how/where you're going to drive it etc If you just want something that is a fun daily drive then maybe the TDI would suit you? But if you're after decent performance, you need to look at a GT/GTi or mark iv R32. The TDI isn't exactly quick and if it's performance you're after, you will tire very quickly of it.

You can pick up 05 Gtis for under $25K

And 100'000kms is nothing really. 10 years ago, cars fell apart after this amount of kms, but a gti will easily do over 200 without any major issues if it's taken care of & serviced regularly.

          >>It does really depend on what you are after in a car and how/where you're going to drive it etc <<

I am female, recently retired (no more peak hour traffic on the Monash Freeway - yay!!), and don't do a lot of driving any more. I am not after performance, but more after something reliable, cheap to run, and looks good! My current car is an 1992 Australian-made 2.0L Nissan Pulsar Q (which I believe won Car of the Year when it was released) which still has plenty of oomph, but there's something wrong with the electricals which is starting to drive me nuts e.g. the odomoeter and trip meter no longer work, the remote central locking doesn't work, the door open warning light is permanently on, the fuel gauge is inaccurate, etc etc and the quotes I have got to fix all these problems would cost more than the car is worth.

I owned a Golf for many years back in the 80s, and I loved that car. Since deciding I want a 'new' car, I have drooled over the new 118TSI Golf. But finding out it would cost around $35K to get on the road, I abandoned that idea. So then I turned to thinking about a secondhand Golf, and found that I didn't understand all the variables of make and model. Hence my post here after discovering this forum whilst researching Golfs.

The replies received so far have certainly helped clarify some of the issues that concerned me, and I'm a lot clearer about what most of the designations mean. I guess a new concern, prompted by something I read recently, is the country of manufacture. It seems that some more recent Golfs were made in South Africa, but I read these are not considered as good as those made in Germany. Is this the case? How do you know where it was made? Rarely is this stated in the ads, but perhaps there is one of the models (or MYxxx designation) that tells you this?

Finally, one of the links provided by one of the replies looks to be a pretty good deal - a 2008 Pacific MY08, with only 16K on the clock, 6 speed manual with a 2L engine and registered until next September, for $26500. Does this sound too good to be true?

P.S. how come all the non-GTI cars for sale are either silver/grey or black. I wanted a red one, but the only ones I've seen are GTIs.

I've got the 2007/2008 brochures for all the Golf's from back when I was in the market. If someone can pm me, I'll scan them in for a MKV Golf Sticky for this exact sort of question......or are they already up somewhere, such as on MKV? I'm sure I've seen them somewhere.....

Eggles that pacific would be awesome. I think you'd be happy around Sportline level, given your criteria. The Pacific was a Sportline with a few extra goodies, and well worth the $$$. I'd suggest you stick with petrol unless you get to drive a diesel before buying, it's certainly not everyone's cup of tea.

Most red buyers are younger fast and furious types, and they usually opt for the sporty GTI's. By the time GT's and other models start to appeal, you're a bit over red ( usually, but heck, you go girl! ) You won't be alone, there is another lady on here in red TSI for instance.

Catona you're kidding yourself mate, the very best I can do in my GT is 7.5, and that's an ideal full bore clutch and tyres be damned launch. I've practiced it a LOT of times. I am dead level with the six pack brigade, a modern decent eight driven with intention is out of reach for me in stock form.

I think this was brought up in another thread a while back. I have a South African built Golf and I can assure you the build quality is very good. The quality control is determined by VW not the country it is being built in, so no matter where the car is built, the quality would have to be the same.

On the other hand, I have read somewhere that some models of German built Mercedes haven't been quite up to scratch, at least to the standard expected by long time regular customers.

I think if you take the advice given by many here, I don't think you will go wrong and I am sure you will find a second hand Golf that will give you years of reliable motoring.

And congratulations on your not having to put up with the Monash anymore!

Unfortunately Tornado Red wasn't available on the normal models, only the GT and GTI models (and 5 R32s that slipped into the country).

I agree about the South African Golf's, the only Mk5's built in Germany were the R32 and the 3 door GTI's Everything else was SA.
I guess another good option, is if you are not after performance, is a Jetta, they tend to be a bit better value than the equivalent Golf for what is essentially the same car in a sedan, and has the added advantage of having a bit more space in the rear too.

In the budget you have there seems to be a few decent deals floating around.

Dealer wise, they are all the much of a muchness, I'm in Richmond so for the past 2 cars ive spoken to Camberwell and South Yarra, bought both from South Yarra, with the advantage that their Satellite service centre is about 150m from my house and I cant fault any work they have done for me.

I find that i could probably buy cheaper if i go further out but definitely get better service by buying and servicing at the same dealership no matter what anyone says. Therefore ill buy locally and never have to travel too far.

I guess for 2nd hand its whoever has the car you want.

This car looks to be at Camberwell and with some haggling would be close to $25k

                    as does this one.

                      Update...

                      Just found this.

Its a MK6 77 TDI, but at decent money if you wanted a mk6, also a 1.4 TSI for about $1000 more kicking around.

I would check out those Jettas...
They seem like such good buys, and are excellent value for money, with all the features as standard equipment.
