Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Wheel (Bearing ?) noise

    Hey all,
Got a wierd intermittent problem with my MkV GTi.

LHF wheel has a "wheel" bearing grind noise, but only very intermittently.

It seems to only be after a long hot drive (eg up the freeway in Adelaide, and its a hot day), and the wheel is loaded and turned (eg going right around a roundabout)

To me its sounds like a stuffed wheel bearing, but I thought if that the case it would be a permanent noise.

Or It may be something contacting the rotor under load, but there's no scrape marks.

The local (Dutton Murray Bridge) Dealer had the car a few weeks ago and found no fault, but the noise has come back....

It might be worth having a really good look for a small piece of gravel in the caliper or touching the backing plate. Unless it is really digging in it won't leave a noticeable mark on the rotor. I got rid of an intermittent sqealing noise in my RHR wheel on my Octy by finally locating the piece of gravel behind the backing plate.

Does the LHF wheel bearing get noticeably hotter than the RHF one ?

Good idea, might check this tomorrow with the Mk1 thumb.

press the backing plate back away from the disc and you will more than likely find a nice bit of stone ground down smooth but like above no marks on the rotors, seen many a time especially on MK5 golf, noise comes and goes but the stone stays!....VW.............. (sometimes you need to completely remove the rotor depending on where the little bugger has gone)

wow i jumped on the forum to look up a similar problem and there is a new thread with nearly the same problem....

I went to take my GTI for a spin tonight after work and got two blocks from home when i heard a clang. I imediately thought the worst had happened but then i think it was the rear right brake started screeching. I went around the block and pulled into my driveway and heard another clang as i went over the gutter like something had dislodged....

Had a quick look under the car and around the rims but couldnt see anything. I took it for another few laps around the block and now everything seems fine. Not loss of power, noises or vibrations...

I am hoping it was just a stone... I have to drive it home for christmas tomorrow... I dont think the dealer is open tomorrow. I dont have any warning lights or anything like that.

Across a lot of forums there seems to exact same reports. Mainly it is always a stone caught.

I've got this too. sometimes sounds like a whining rear diff in a taxi.
Dealer 1 said I need a wheel alignment.
Dealer 2 said it was normal, just road noise.

Also feathering on tyres can make a humming sort of noise. Noticeable say at 100kph and you bias steering slightly.
May be normall from driving or alignment tolerance but always worth checking out.

Yeah I had an odd low speed rotation noise from the front right, and thought it was a rotor contact issue. New tyres, and it's gone. Perhaps worth rotating tyres to see if it "moves".
