Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Golf V 2.0 FSI Sportline vs MKIV GTI

    Hi all,

I wasnt sure whether to post this in the mk4 or mk5 forum, but I guess I know less about the mk5s...

I'm a MK3 GL driver.. I've always wanted a Mk5 GTI but still cant afford the 2nd hand ones.. Was close to getting a MK4 GTI.. but then I heard about the 2.0 FSIs.

Can anyone comments on the 2.0 FSI Sportline? Is this the next best performer in the MK5 line up?

Would you get a MK4 GTi which I feel is:
    - Looks nice
    - Nice to drive
    - Handling and Suspension OK
    - Great interior and quality

But.. getting on in age and I'm not likely to be able to lease it, so will have to pull my own $$$ out.

Is the MK5 Sportline suspension much better than the MK4 GTI?

Are the Sportline models the only ones that get color coded bumper strips and door handles (other than GT/GTI/R32 ofcourse)

Anyone compare for me the following? :

    - Loading space ? Do both have flat folding seats like in my MK3?
    - Performance (not just raw numbers, but the feel to it, fun to drive factor etc)
    - Fuel efficiency and running costs.

Oh, and no mods for me.. so I'm talking stock. No chipping etc

    Thanks

I just bought a MK5 sportline and am loving it .

Had an Audi A4 B6 before it, Golf is heaps better to drive.

I think that along with the door handles and trim the sportline suspension sits approx 20mm lower than the trenline / comfortlines.

Also the sporty seats hug you in pretty well.

Mine also has a sunroof not sure if that was an option though. And has a 6 speed manual.

Never driven a MK4 Gti but I was also considering it, but along with ks, age of car etc I decided to go for the newer shape model.

Drive them both if you get chance I guess

      good luck

      cheers Chris

Hey hey, I know you have narrowed the field already. I'm looking to expand it... Maybe.

could you tell us your budget? I'm guessing 15-20k??

          Hey man,

          I have a Pacific FSI,

From my point of view it has everything,

It's nice to run, very eco with the petrol you can have 650km with one tank, I drive a lot everywhere in Sydney, everyday, and I love it!,

In comparison with older models, this one has fog lights, coloured mirrors, sides and handles, auto wipes and headlights, cruise control, MP3 8 speakes, its 2.0, 16" wheels, and another plus,

Obviously depends of the extra options that you want,

About the power, it's powered enought to give you what you need, to overtake in a hill or in the highway, to go fast when you need it, it's more really for show,

          Good luck!

Mk4 all the way,If you can buy one of the last MK4's then go for it. Better built by a country mile,Made in Germany as apposed South Africa. Sure the MK5 has a few newer features, but the 1.8T is a gem.If you can get a low K's one for the same money as a MK5 or less, get the 4.
I have owned two MK4's and two Mk5's and there is no comparisson between the two in terms of quality.
