Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MK5 whiny vibration upon takeoff

    Hi all,

I'm hoping you can help me diagnose a problem with the 2006 MKV 2.0 TDI that I have just purchased.

My golf is making a whining noise upon take off. The best way for me to describe the sound is to liken it to the power steering in some cars, where it just whines a little when at full lock at low speed - in the carpark, for example. Does that make sense?

It appears to be coming from the clutch as the noise only occurs when the pedal is in use and at a particular point in the travel. The problem is intermittant and *seems* to be random.

I asked the dealer who I bought the car from to fix it and so they sent the car to VW in Newstead but it was returned. They claimed that there was no sound when they took it for a "long" test drive. This was 2 weeks ago. Since then the sound appears to be happening more frequently and may be a little louder than before.Initially it was happening only in 1st gear on takeoff from standstill, but now it is happening a bit in 2nd gear when trying to take up the clutch at low speeds.

I realise that this is not much information but what do you think it is that could be causing this sound? I really want it fixed but I can imagine that the dealership would be reluctant to replace the clutch if at all possible!

I should also add that I have just sent away to have the VW extended warranty (that the previous owner purchased) transferred to my name.

    Thanks for you help,

    Throwout bearing?

Go see J-mac from this forum, and get a second opinion, especially after a visit to the dealer you mentioned. Not a great reputation.

+2 for the throwout bearing making contact on the fingers.

Ok cool. About how much do you think this would be to repair? Is it dangerous to let it go unfixed?

...well I ran a noisy throwout bearing for nearly two years in my first car a Mazda RX-2 scrotary, and to say it was thrashed was an understatement. Still the car was that loud, a noisy bearing was hardly a worry. Google it to see what it actually does, only has load during gear changes / hill starts. More the noise than anything, but one day it could decide to blow up, and probably wreck your clutch and pressure plate, which would be a much larger repair bill. I'd make it a medium level priority, first quarter 2010 job?
