  • R32 Lighting Question

Hi Guys, just wondering if anyone has changed their high beam on the R32? I don't like the yellow light emanating from the high beam and would like to change it to a Philips "bluer" globe. Any comments? I was looking at the Diamond Vision or Crystal Vision ones. The Diamond Vision boast 5000K and Crystal Vision 4300K - was just wondering which colour temperature would more resemble the Xenon light next to it?

The osram night breaker will both perform better and better match the colour.

      4300.

I have tried some 4300 HIDs with success to match the oe H/L.
Just waiting on a pair of slimline ballasts to make fitting easier.

Baz, so you think the OE Xenon is about 4300K temp? Could you tell me why you went for the HID instead of the Halogen bulb please? As I don't do a lot of night driving that demands the constant hi beam, I thought I might just stick with traditional bulbs, but one that closely resemble the colour temperature of the Xenon next to it. Do you have any suggestions? Cheers.

I thought the R32 had bi-xenons, meaning that the high beams should match the low beam in colour?

The Bixenon means that it is high and low beam - that's correct. The way VW has it is that there is a cover which partially shades the Xenon in "low beam" mode so it doesn't shine too far and too high to dazzle oncoming traffic, but with "high beam" engaged, the flap opens up to throw more light at a further distance. Aside from this, the "inner" two lights will also come on, throwing more light out - but these "inner" lights are not Xenons or HIDs - they are just normal filament bulbs, hence has a yellowish tint.

Why you might ask that the factory has these "duplicated" high beams - I think the answer is that when you "flash" someone - the Xenons take a little while to warm up - like a few milliseconds and they don't glow as bright initially - they have to warm up like your fluorescent bulbs/tubes at home, hence a conventional "filament" type bulb is used to instantly light up, plus it further enhances the brightness of the high beam.

This is only my guess. Would anybody else have another interpretation?

Yeah, plus flashing Xenons significantly reduces their life. Then again, flashing halogens significantly reduces their life. It's just cheaper to replace a $30 halogen bulb than a $200 d2s HID bulb.

Same reason you want to match the color. The inners dont give much improvement over high beam as halogens. The hids make a difference.
                oe color is 4300.

d2s bulbs now about $50 but Ive never blown a hid on any car yet.

Spot on - IIRC VW call it "Flash to pass" or something similar.
