Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Parcel shelf balls in Mk5?

To the mark 5 owners, in the Mark 6 forum we're finding that when we encounter a hump, our balls knock against the parcel shelf creating a noise. Details (& jokes) in this post. The balls I'm referring to are at the end of the string suspending the parcel shelf.

I don't recall hearing my balls knock against anything in my old Mark 5... just wondering if any Mark 5 owners have this issue or whether it's just Mark 6?

    parcel shelf rubber balls

my balls are quiet... but they are a soft edged rubbery looking thing. Are yours hard plastic? Or other tougher material prone to loud noise when making contact with the inner boot plastic covers?

I tell you what is annoying though - in the mk5.... the passenger side seatbelt clip constantly hitting the plastic pillar!!

Never had any problems with my balls making excessive noise.
They do hang quite low and swing freely when the boot is closed though so I guess unless you were moving along at quite a brisk pace then they wouldnt really hit anything

as far as mine are concerned,

One hangs a little bit lower than the other. I have returned the item to point of sale/origin, and have been assured that it is normal/acceptable.

They swing around a bit in the warm weather, but I have noticed definite "shrinkage" in colder climes.

I had some trouble with mine, so I had them removed.

Mark V has the exact same problem. As I mentioned on the other thread I'll post details of a fix that lets the string remain taught when the hatch is closed soon once I get the final parts.

I even had the rigid bit that they affix to removed at the same time.

I think the balls in the Mk6 hang lower than in the Mk5. Can someone look at their balls later today? Just curious to know if they are resting against the parcel shelf.

In the mk6 they swing cos the balls are not against the parcel shelf.

This is all just curiosity as to why I don't recall any issue from my old Mk5 (as I don't have it any more)

as mentioned already. My balls hang quite low.

heres a crappy phone pic of one of my balls. you can just see it hanging at the top.

Maybe u can post a pic of one of your balls so we can compare?

was that a pre-requisite to be a Mod?

Nah, nothing so sinister to mod around here. I call it the 'parcel shelf delete', you can check out my thread I am going to start soon.

The butt dyno will give me the impression I have .5 additional KW now.

They're the same. The balls only rest against the parcel shelf when you open the hatch. When the hatch is closed they hang down to keep the string taut.

Yeah, it is a little dark in the rear end. I will see later today if I can shove a camera up the rear to take a pic. I'll do likewise & keep my tail shut
