  • Single reverse light - Jetta

    Hi,
Why does most of the VW's have a single reverse light (on the left)? What is the other light (red) for? Just curious as no one seems to know. Not even the delivery people at VW.

    Cheers

White - reverse light. Why single; no idea!
    Red - Rear Fog Light.

Here is a tip, the owners manual is full of information, as well this forum!
MY18 VW Passat Alltrack Wolfsburg Edition + Panoramic Sunroof + some extra goodies... (Pure White)
MY17 ŠKODA Superb 206TSI 4x4 + Sunroof + Tech Pack + Comfort Pack + some extra goodies... (Moon White)

You will find that the other light is the rear fog lamp.

It is possible to remove the red lens from that side and wire it up so it also is a reverse light - search the site and the DIY should come up pretty quick.

Thanks mate. Nothing in the manual. I am anyways unhappy about the manual as I received an older manual with my MY10 Jetta. All of the contents in book 3.1 is using older photos and text. Still workng with the dealer to get me a new one.

        Regards

I find it pretty hard to believe it's not covered in the manuals that you have. Are you sure one isn't missing or you skipped it? The manuals go into each area in reasonable depth and it's covered in multiple areas across multiple manuals (areas like bulb replacement, driving in inclement weather, switch usage and so forth)

It's not unusual for the manual to be slightly different as these are put together in Australia.

I don't think it actually specifies why there's only one/the location of the reverse/fog lights.

The fog will always be on the driver's side, so it's the opposite in the EU/USA.

              MY10 Jetta manuals

Maneesh I took delivery of my new Jetta about 2 weeks ago and have the same problem with the manuals. Book 3.1 is for the old car. I have been to the dealer who are trying to get me an updated version.

                Hi,

I was just checking that in this forum as well. I have noticed the same thing. Also, if you look surrounding of the reverse and fog lights the spaces for the led holes are blank (well!! mine's are..). There are no led lights in them. Is this becasue I have the 2.0 FSI not TFSI???

                Cheers to all!

Nahh, they're just blank spaces on the inner clusters. I've seen some cars in the USA with inner LED rings but never in Australia.

As for removal of the red lense, I'm having it done to my "spare" set of tail lights - will report on exactly how he went about doing it and the result which will hopefully be positive

Why would anyone do that? the reverse light on the left seems to make sense as it illuminates the kerb.. and i have actually used the rear fog lamp on a few occasions--> stretch of road between canberra and candello (near Bega) where it is a notorious spot for very heavy fog. and i have felt very comfortable knowing i have a blindingly bright rear red lamp for any cars approaching behind.

having said that - i was driving behind an Alfa 159 the other day around sunset (half light) and he had his rear fog lamp cranking.... i had to drive 3-4 car lengths behind him because it was SOOOOO bright! i'm sure he had no idea it was on. idiot.

Its a VW thing. No late model veedubs that im aware of have 2 reverse lights, its quiet annoying when people yell to me at the servo or on the street " mate one of ya reverse lights are out!"

Because having two is AWESOME light for reversing, and some of us don't live in cold climates! The difference is amazing, love my twin reverse spotlights ( with diffusers removed! )

The Amarok has no rear foggie but two reverse lamps. Jealous?

While we may not live in cold climates, I find that the rear fog has come in handy in our freak summer storms.
