My 60,000km MKV GTI Service Pricing

Ok, i'm sure quite a few of us are heading towards the 60,000km mark, which is a major service.

There are 2 major price variance for this service depending on the year and transmission.

Basically, if you have a manual car, the price of the dealership service is $900 (+/-10%)
If you have DSG, it goes to $1400 (+/-10%)
and if you've had your car for 4 years, you'll also need to change the timing belt which will cost a lot more. (also meaning you might as well change the water pump)

Anyway, I shopped around different Dealerships in Melbourne and found South Yarra being the most expensive while Camberwell being the cheapest..

However, as I work near South Yarra, they were the most convenient, so I rang them up, told them Camberwell was doing it at a certain price, and they came back and said "yup, we'll do the same..."

Anyway, ended up getting the 60,000km service and the DSG service for $1130 all inclusive. Still pretty expensive, but you pay for the convenience i guess.

sounds very expensive compared to my 60k service in Feb this year. $572.55 @ Barloworld Glen Waverley. I must add this price is probably influenced my my leasing company who use them as a preferred supplier.

You don't have a DSG gearbox. ~$500 of his service was the DSG. $1130 - $500 = $630 which is under $60 difference.

DSG services should be between $400 and $500 normally.

I think the manuals require a fluid change at some point don't they but I assume that would be only a few hundred dollars?

So what makes the service of a DSG that expensive? Forgive me for asking but I may as well understnd now that Jetta's don't come with a manual in the 2.0 TDI guise.

When the lease is up on my TDI my choices are now a little limited

I think the manuals require a fluid change at some point don't they but I assume that would be only a few hundred dollars?

Not sure when the manual tranny has a fluid change. The handbook is not real specific and it has not changed yet.

A 90k service is coming up in about 2-3 months so will report back if it is changed then.

It's mainly because it's a slightly complex operation because of the gearbox design, the clutches and even the controller are immersed in an oil.

Volkswagen DSG Mechatronic Replacement

I have a list of parts on the link above but there is 6 litres of DSG oil for ~$160, a transmission filter for ~$65, a few seals for ~$5, disposal of the old oil and 2-3 hours of labour ($200-$300). There is a special tool required to fill (you can make your own) and you have to connect the car to a dealer tool or vagcom/vcds and run through the gears with the engine running to refill the box.

The price is pretty reasonable when you consider the boxes complexity and the cost of the not maintaining it!

only got 45K on my Mk5 GTi atm so there is a while until I do a major service but I did manage to get a 3 year extended new car warranty with Camberwell VW

I'm getting conflicting advice about changing the timing belt. Some people are saying it needs to be replaced at 60,000 / 4 years but the Volkswagen service schedule says it should be replaced at 120,000. The only thing that I can see for the 60,000 / 4 year service is new plugs and new air cleaner element.

That's 2005 and the time the Mark V was first manufactured. Volkswagen update their recommendations based on how items perform and changes to materials used in the production process hence the new requirements.

I recently purchased a 2000 model (MK4) Golf 2.0 and VW recommended a timing belt change at 3yrs or 60,000 kms on that. The belt was changed in 2006 even though the car had only travelled about 50,000 k's at that stage, it was replaced (along with the tensioner) due to it's age. I've had a timing belt snap in the past (old Toyota Corona) and was very fortunate that it happened on start up and didn't cause any other damage. I'd suggest replacing the belt as recommended by VW or at least have it checked for peace of mind. My .02c worth :>)

Yeah, the Corona was (is) free spinning engine (means no damage to the valves, if you brake timing belt). Unfortunately most of the engines with the timing belt aren't made like that.

Genuine bets should always be the best replacement part for your late model VW, how ever Gates make some belts that will last longer. Materials used for making timing belts had improved in past years as well. And how old is the belt already before you fit it, is important too. I noticed that Gates timing belt kits have date of manufacture on the box.

GTI 60k Service, rang dealers.

Chatswood; 60k service is $1200 plus they check the timing belt, if they do it, it's another $900. Total $2100.

Buckle's Brookvale; 60k service is $1400, the timing belt is done at 105k / 7yrs

Barloworld Mascot; 60k service is $1500, the timing belt is done at 105k / 7yrs

60k service includes DSG transmission oil and filter, $400 at all three.
