  • How to tell difference between 1.9 and 2.0 TDI?

First post.....though I've been reading for a while.

Assuming both cars have been debadged and both are Comfortlines, is there an easy way to tell the difference between a 1.9 and 2.0 TDI?

To me, they would appear exactly the same right?

Are there any noticeable or obvious differences?

Externally and internally...just the same. But drive them and you'll notice the difference immediately! And welcome!

        Ta for the welcome.

My point is, that if by chance you see a TDI in a car yard with no badges, how are you meant to tell them apart? You may not have the luxury of being able to compare with another, so is there a definitive way to set them apart in that situation?

Say a crafty salesperson decides to sell a 1.9 as a 2.0. I have seen a 1.9 advertised as a 2.0 but the Trendline spec was a bit of a giveaway.

            Excellent

Do you have the different engine codes on hand by chance?

Look at the delivery sticker in the logbook.

Check out the Kws in the front of the service manual and I am not sure if the engine cover actually has 2l on it??
Welcome to the forum, its great to have you here!

The grills are different - the black cross hatch grill under the number plate is more open/has bigger holes on the 2.0 than the 1.9. If you have a look its obvious on 07 models anyway.

ones 8v ones 16v, but that may not be apparent... cos the engine covers are both plastic

Thanks for the above posts, they are quite helpful.

I've found another difference myself. They look fairly similar under the bonnet to a layperson, but in the 2.0 the dipstick opening is on the far left of the plastic cover whereas on the 1.9 it's in the middle.

Just ask your friendly salesperson. You can trust them.

Yes, it's pretty easy to tell the difference visually between a Trendline and a Comfortline, regardless of engine spec. My question though, was directed towards the differences between the Comfortline specs of either engine.

It's pretty difficult to tell the difference if by chance a dealer had removed the badges, which means it may be tempting for a dodgy dealer to try and sell a 1.9 TDI as a 2.0 TDI.
